NOTD: New Contradiction Nails

Before I gave the amazing CND Contradictions Collection safety back to Creative Academy+ Manchester I was able to quickly do my nails with some of the colours to show you as well as a ton of nail art ideas which shall be tomorrow's post.

I have to admit it was actually difficult to chose which shades to wear but I went with CND Shellac in Peacock Plume and Safety Pin.

On my middle finger I used MoYou London Pro Collection Plate 13 along with China Glaze "Robotika" nail polish which I think may be discontinued.  I can't tell you how stunning this combination is, I absolutely adore it.

Slim Down Sunday: Week 7

As usual I started this week extremely positive, keen to start shedding even more pounds to get to where I want to be.  This post is going to be really, really honest - that's not to say that the others aren't of course but it's more to say that speaking as I am going to do is almost a frightening thing because it allows you into my real thoughts.

The week started off well in terms of meals, once again we had a good box from Gousto and I really enjoyed the weeks in particular that we do have one of those boxes.  In a lot of respects I feel like that is the reason why I've never been bored with what I'm eating however - and here's where I get serious - I'm an addict.  I'm absolutely addicted to food. If you've ever been in my position you'll understand that it goes far deeper than just being a bit greedy and the occasional pig out.  I'm talking not being able to concentrate on anything around you until you see to the rest of the packet of biscuits in the cupboard.

Here's the thing, the photos I included in this post are all things that I ate this week and they were lovely but I am naughty and I do got on the scales.  It's silly really but it means that if I see a difference then I'm really happy but sometimes if I don't see a difference then I have been known to in the past go in a downward spiral.  They so fortunately was what happened on Wednesday.

I know that what I did wasn't the end of the world and I feel a little bit silly to even have to talk about it.  I just fancied having a moment where I could stop thinking about my limitations I'm just enjoy something without counting calories or syns.  It ended up being where as I went into the kitchen and I got a bar chocolate out the fridge, it was one of those large bars and my husband said that if I was going to have it, to share half of it with him.  Now for reference, this was 300 calories because it was dark chocolate so it wasn't like I went to KFC here but the relief was instant.  I had gotten that thought out of my system.  I knew I could then get back on it and heading towards where I want to be.  I hope that that doesn't happen again often, or worse.

On a positive note I've had a few good feelings this week, one of them being that I went into Dorothy Perkins again.  This was a shop I used to adore but as the larger sizes can be more limited I eventually stopped going there and truth be known, that were times that they probably wouldn't have fit.  This was a lovely experience even having a potential of getting something although unfortunately, there wasn't anything that caught my eye this time.

This will probably sound silly but I've suddenly realised how brilliant Fit Bit actually is.  It only dawned on me a few days ago that because my fitness pal is linked to the fit bit app, it wax out how much I've eaten too how much I've exercised as to whether I'm over, under or on target for the day to reach my weight loss goal.  This is fantastic but obviously it means if I've done a sudden rush of exercise then I need to keep checking it and eat accordingly.

I've been using this little scoop that my mum was given a while ago to measure my portions of cereal.  I must admit I knew that an actual portion wasn't much but I didn't realize how grim it actually was!

This is All Bran Golden Crunch cereal which is delicious.  It's a 30g (Slimming World Healthy B portion) and it's absolutely tiny.

Even when I add the milk it really is nothing which is a shame but then I could pick a different cereal if I really wanted to and have more.

So onto the weigh in, I went into it with the thought that my calories have been higher this week.  I knew the one thing that would kill me off would be if I put on or even stayed the same,  I felt like if that happened then I hadn't really been bad and I could've been worse if that was going to happen anyway.  However I am pleased to say that this week I lost one and half pounds bringing me to a loss of 21lbs in seven weeks.  I am delighted with my progress so far, of course it's natural to always want that little bit more but each new number is looking even more beautiful to me.  I shall speak to you all next week!

Things to remember:
  • Every day we have a choice, it's a fresh start and the most important part from any healthy eating plan is to just try and make as many days, good ones.
  • Losing a pound a week is still over three and a half stone in a year!
  • If you're feeling particularly down about your weight, remember that if you stick to a balanced diet then by this time next week you could have dropped quite a few pounds, just the kick start you need to get going!  Even just by cutting down on treats you could make a difference, how good would that feel?!

As I explained in the video, Poison Plum in Shellac currently has a worldwide manufacturing delay so this will be released at a later date (to be confirmed) however the Vinylux version will be available from the 1st of July.

There are two shades that are exclusive to Vinylux and they are:
  • Grommet
  • Couture Covet

Apart from the exclusive shades, Rouge Rite is the only shade that is only available in Shellac and not Vinylux.

The Additives for this collection are particularly interesting because they're mainly not the finely milled powder that we're used to but instead real nail art pieces that can be used to create masterpiece nails.

I love that CND have done something completely different with this collection and look forward to trying them properly for myself.

Nail Haul

Today I went up to Creative Academy Manchester to check out the new CND Contradictions Collection.  If you've ever been there that you'll know that when you go you can't help but walk away with loads of fun nail bits.

It seems that they've discontinued a lot of the Dashing Diva range.  This is such a shame to me because I really liked it, in particular at their Accents line because they're really easy to apply and very effective.  As this is a public website I cannot reveal professional prices however the excess stock they are selling for a very reasonable price so I picked up of ton of them, some that I already have, so that I can offer them for longer.

The other product I bought was a new Solar Oil.  I have this at my nail desk and use it a lot but the packaging with the rubber dropped is so annoying as it eventually breaks with the oils and now my old one cannot be used so I had to give in and buy a replacement.  I just really wish they made them some other way as this is the third I've bought but it is a good product.

Thats it for now but I am back there on Monday so who knows what I pick up then!

Current Favourites: June 2015

It's been a while since I spoke about my current beauty loves so I thought I'd run through a few favourite items!

After seeing how dry my skin has been recently I've been trying to step up my moisturising game with Soap & Glory Righteous Butter.  The scent is classic Soap & Glory and it leaves my skin feeling brilliant.

Next up is Batiste Dry Shampoo in Pomegranate & Jasmine.  I really hope that this scene isn't limited edition because it's gorgeous but I truly adore Batiste and this works well and has this amazing fragrance.

Kiehls Hydro Plump Retexturising Concentrate is a firm favourite to keep the skin on my face hydrated and plump.  It's fantastic under make up too!

The final two products are from Urban Decay.  The blush is in "Video" and it's a brilliant shade that's somewhere between a blush and a contour.  The other is a new eyeshade called "Backfire" which I like to put on my crease for a subtle polished look for daytime make up.  Both are demfinitely a must for your make up bags!

Focusing On: Lecente Stardust Glitter on Earth

I love it when you pick a colour combination and you're not entirely sure how it's going to turn out but when it does, it's fantastic.  I fancied having a play around with a couple of colour pops so I decided to focus today's post on Lecente Stardust in Earth and I was blown away by the results.

Earth is a Stardust glitter that is somewhere between a grey, a silver and a green.  I feel like many would instantly think to parents with a similar shade to get the letter that you can see in the pot.

I think some of the above combinations may surprise you so I'll tell you what they are.  From left to right is CND Shellac in Creekside, Salmon Run, Beckoning Begonia, Bicycle Yellow and Wisteria Haze.  I can't tell you how beautiful they are, completely stunning.  This glitter is really worth having a play with, particularly the lighter shades.

Slim Down Sunday: Week 6

This week started on a high as I just couldn't believe that I had lost 3 and 1/2 pounds last week.  I've had a couple of requests to explain the slimming world plan so if you'd like to read my explanation of it, click here.

I must say that this past week or so I have actually been almost combining two different weight loss methods.  I stick to the principles of slimming world in terms of mainly eating free foods, I have my measurement of fibre and dairy as they specify and I try to keep to the syn value allowed.  The bit that means that I'm following something else is that more and more I'm finding that I'm actually counting the calories, this is something that Slimming World do not teach you to do but I do know from previous experience that if you literally take the "free food" concept to the limit that you may not lose much weight per week from that so this is where I've basically introduced myself to a calorie controlled plan but eating "good food" as per Slimming World.

It was something originally that I was dubious about trying because I've never counted calories before (okay I'm laughing in my head at that comment - obviously I've never counted calories or I would be thin!) but I figured if it doesn't give me the results that I want, I would just return to Slimming World the following week, however it seems to have been working very well for me because in some instances as though I'm keeping to the principles mainly, if something that I want to eat is a little over what they allow then I will simply look at it from my calorie counting points of view instead and then I feel like that's giving me a lot of freedom.

The two meals above or actually from the Gousto menu which are lamb meatballs and beef tagliatelle, both of which contain one or two ingredients that would've needed to be synned on  Slimming World.  I spoke to the lovely Alex who is the lady who's lost over 8 stone by calorie counting and she is slowly trying to teach me that although these items may contain fat, it's good fat so this is where in my mind, I forget SW for a second and look at my overall calories for the day which I am typical always under for (thanks to the My Fitness Pal app!)

Wow I hope I'm not making this all sound confusing?!  In my mind it makes perfect sense and I've been really happy doing it, if it stops working, I will be straight back onto Slimming World exclusively.

My general food menu this week has been anything with broccoli.  I want to make sure that I am getting at least some vegetables into my diet so brocoli has been it and I believe, a big reason for last weeks loss.

As luck would have it, my husband mentioned that there are a few ladies in his work that go to Slimming World classes so I asked him if he thought one of them would be able to get me their Hi-fi bars.  Two of their small bars is equal to your fibre for the day and although I love my Alpen light, I have to admit that these are by far the best to have.

Fast forward to Wednesday and I made a decision that, as I was so near to the stone bracket below that I would buy are really nice present for myself that would sit in my living room until I hit that goal.  My husband and I went over to the Trafford Centre and I treated myself to Jo Malone Wood Sage & Sea Salt Body Creme.  It's a small fortune but I deserve it - there, I've said it.

Whilst we were there I looked at the time and realised that we needed to get something to eat.  This is always a little bit of a worry for me now because I don't want to go off plan so I know that I need to choose wisely.  I knew that there was a Wetherspoons there so I decided to head over to there with the intention of choosing their sweet chilli noodles with chicken which is low calorie.  Unfortunately their menu is a lot smaller there and they do not do them, so I was left to try and figure out a different option.  I opted for steak and asked my husband to ask the server if I could have a jacket potato instead of chips.  Unfortunately however they did not offer jacket potatoes at that Wetherspoons so I was really proud of myself because I then asked for a load of vegetables instead.  Trust me when I say that this is not how I normally am - The old me would've just figured "oh well you've tried Karen, have the chips, it's not your fault" but the new me is determined to reach her goals.

One of my friends suggested getting Cadbury's Freddos to melt with fruit and having what she called "a poor mans fondue."  Hilariously I bought from Freddos with that intention in mind but so far I've only managed to unwrap them and just eat them - within my allowance for the day, of course.

On Friday I got ready without too much thought, although I realised that my jeans were a little big.  It was only when I returned and actually looked in the mirror that I realised how baggy they are now.  What I hold the jeans tight you can see how big they were, it's borderline hilarious and I'm pleased but also a bit sad that I won't be able to wear them anymore.  I know that's really silly but when I find things I like I'll wear them to death!

So onto the bit that I'm guessing you all want to know, the weigh in.  I have to say I was quietly confident that I had definitely shifted some pounds this week.  I know it's naughty both I did jump on the scales a couple of times through the week so I was a little bit excited.  So the question is, is the Jo Malone mine this week? You're damn right!  This week I've lost 3lbs, bringing me to a total loss of 19.5lbs in six weeks!  I'm now in the top end of the next stone bracket now, this is a long road to where I want to be and I always knew it was going to be (or I wouldn't be making such a big deal out of it dedicating a section of my blog to it) but I know I can do this and my method of combining the two theories is working great both for my body as well as not limiting me.  Hopefully I'll be a little bit lighter again for the next update!

Slimming World Explained

Slimming world is something that I know very well, I think I probably started following it on and off around 12 years ago and when I do follow it properly, it really does work.  When I started this process I explained it all to my friend Jade and she since lost quite a few pounds in the weeks that I've been doing it.  I've had a couple of requests to explain the general gist of Slimming World so here goes with a brief outline.

If you've followed the Slimming World plan before, you'll know that years ago it used to be red and green days which you can still do but they have since launched "Extra Easy" which is literally that so that's what I shall be explaining.

In a nutshell you have free foods, you can eat as much as you like of these without needing to weigh them.  They are:
  • Fruit (fresh or frozen but not tinned)
  • Veg (fresh, frozen or tinned)
  • Mushrooms
  • Pasta (dried only)
  • Rice
  • Eggs
  • Meat (fat and skin removed)
  • Fish
All of the above are free providing that they are either eaten raw, steamed, boiled, oven baked or fried using a low calorie spray like Fry Light - which is also free.  There are other food that are free for example, spaghetti hoops, baked beans, standard flavour Muller Light yoghurts and certain Mug Shot drinks - all of this is mentioned in the Slimming World books.

Next you have your "Healthy Extra A" choice which is effectively your dairy for the day so this is either milk or cheese.  This needs to be measured, depending on what it is, as per the SW guidelines.  In general though, cheese should be a matchstick box size and milk is usually around 250ml for semi skimmed.  For example, 50% reduced fat cheese or the 1% fat milk you will obviously be allowed more of compared to the full fat equivalent.  Whatever the measurement is, you can split it between milk and cheese if you wish and have half of each.

Alongside your Healthy Extra A is Healthy Extra B which is basically fibre.  This is certain bread, cereal and crackers in certain measurements.  Nimble Wholemeal Bread you are allowed two slices, for example.  You can also have 2x Alpen Light bars for your Healthy Extra B and various other options.

After that you have your Syns which are your treats.  These are things like sauces, sweets, chocolate and crisps.  When you start out its best to assume everything that's not mentioned already above, has a syn value.  If you join a Slimming World group you'll be given a log on to their app which will tell you what the value is of a product.  For the items that are definitely synned and there is no way they would be free, like chocolate, I can teach you a simple method to work out the syns.  If you look at the calorie count, 20 calories equals a syn so a Cadburys Freddo at 95 calories is 5 syns.  You are allowed 15 syns per day on the SW plan.  You also need to eat a minimum of 5.

This is a basic explanation of Slimming World.  There are a few exceptions for example Pot Noodles contain dried noodles that are effectively free but the rest of the contents are synned so you can't work out the value just using the calories (this is where you would refer to your SW books / their app) but you would do it for food that definitely isn't related to any free food like jelly sweets, etc.

Finally they encourage you to have a third of each meal with "speed foods" which are ultimately fruit and vegetables.

I'm sure there's more that I'm not thinking of right now but that's the basics.  Obviously you would have sweetener instead of sugar which is free.  Diet soft drinks and no added sugar drinks are free too.

NOTD: Pastel Floral Nails

I have been hankering after summery nails but wasn't really sure what.  I fancied using from of my Dashing Diva, I particularly liked their "Accents" line but now it seems that Sweet Squared and their partners only stock a few designs now which is a shame.

The colours I used were all CND Shellac in Asphalt, Cream Puff, Mint Convertible, Salmon Run, Studio White and Dessert Poppy.

I used Studio White underneath Mint Convertible and Salmon Run to help with the depth of the colour.

I used used MoYou Princess Collection Plate 12 on my ring finger and thumb .  I adore this print in particular.  I hope you enjoyed this post, please make sure you're following my Facebook  page for future posts!

Bath & Body Works 3 Wick Candle in Caribbean Escape

Recently I've been off my candles a little and been favouring wax melts instead.  I do realise that I have a huge stash of Bath & Body Works 3 Wicks though so I pulled out Caribbean Escape to burn.

This candle says that is has a blend of tropical melon, raspberry nectar and lemon mellowed by creamy coconut mik which is pretty accurate to what I'm smelling.  I would say the scent throw is fairly strong, up there with their most fragrant candles.

My only "con" with this candle is the fact that the wicks seemed to be pretty short.  For that reason it seemed to struggle to burn evenly.  It even has gotten to the point where as the wicks blow out for no reason as well which is annoying.  That aside it is a fantastic candle and I highly recommend it for the summer!

MAC Eyeshadow in Sable

I am a eyeshadow junkie, everyone who knows me knows that I always have my eye make up and when I fancy it, eyelashes too.  I bought a MAC eyeshadow palette a while ago and it cost me a few hundred pounds.  I must admit I didn't use some shades for a while so it's only been more recent that I came across Sable.

Sable is a hard one to describe but to me it's a brown with a red/maroon undertone that looks amazing in the crease.  I like to use it to blend with and then I will often add a darker shade like Satin Taupe into the centre of that to give even more dimension.

As you would expect, the rexture of this eyeshadow is creamy and smooth and it applies so well.  I would consider this shade a staple in anyone's collection.

Focusing On: Lecente Stardust Glitter in Aurora

I adore the Lecente Stardust collection glitters, I can't get enough of them and I want them to bring out the entire colour spectrum of them.  I must admit however, the one I haven't used quite as much as the rest is Aurora.  That's not because of anything to do with the shade but for a long time I was deeply in love with Neptune, Milky Way and Cluster and I just couldn't see past them!

I thought it would be a good idea to showcase this fantastic shade without pairing it with the obvious orange tones to show what this bad boy can do!

Left to right on the above photo are CND Shellac in Tinted Love, Fragrant Freesia, Cerulean Sea, Bicycle Yellow, Wild Fire and Lush Tropics.

My favourites that you have to try are Fragrant Freesia, Cerulean Sea, Lush Tropics and  all of the other shades.  Just kidding!  But I do like them all and you should definitely get this glitter out and play around with it.

I hope you enjoyed reading this post.  I do have loads of 'Focusing On' posts - click here to read them.  Please make sure you're following my Facebook Page for future posts.

Lecente Unusual Colour Combinations

Ever since I watched Maria Cientanni talk at The Event 4.0 ive been inspired to play around a little more with pairing different Lecente glitters with CND Shellac shades that you wouldn't expect to create fantastic colour combinations.

I've been so excited to share with you the video that I created for Lecente as I have really tried to come up with the most unusual combinations for you all to try out and I have definitely found a new love for doing this!

Please click here to watch that video!

Slim Down Sunday: Week 5

Here I am on week five and I'm still feeling that determination to keep going.  As I think I mentioned in my last post (I can't remember, it was a whole week ago!) I was starting to have low syn value sweet treats.  The only thing with that is that I do believe once you get a taste of something again it can be quite hard to take that taste and addiction away.  For that reason, I have tried to limit the amount of sweet things that I've had this week and use the syns on more savoury things like sauces and a little extra cheese.

The above message was from a good friend of mine last Sunday after reading my previous post.   I have lost the equivalent to the weight of her baby now.  If you've ever been through a struggle with your weight you'll know that the support can make or break you so it's lovely to have good people around me.

A new discovery for this week was Weight Watchers Wraps.  They come in wholemeal and white, the wholemeal have a purple section on the front and the whites have a green section on the front.  Originally I was under the impression that the wholemeal version classed as a healthy extra B but now I find out that Slimming World actually class both versions as a healthy extra B for one wrap.

I have been using these wraps to make pizzas.  What I do is I take passata, mix it with herbs and boil it in the pan to thicken it up.  I then spread it on with the back of a spoon and add whatever topping I fancy, this is been typically mushrooms and chicken.  I will then use my healthy extra A which is reduced fat cheese to sprinkle over it.  As the bread is so thin I will cook them from between five and eight minutes.  It's really easy to do and they really do taste like you're eating a regular pizza just with a thin base which is what I prefer anyway.

In the past I have tried to make Slimming World Smash pizza but it just didn't taste anything like bread and I didn't like it so this is our authentic version because you do have every flavour of an average pizza.  I also think it's a good thing to do when you're limited for time or just when you want something a little bit lighter, particularly with warmer weather.

Another thing I've been trying to do is to step up my vegetable game.  I do like quite a few vegetables but the truth is I just wouldn't pick them (probably why I'm fat eh - hilarious) but in order to keep my digestive system going and hopefully shed some pounds, I've made a conscious effort to eat more.

I do you make sure that I stay within the guidelines but that I also do have some really tasty treats.  Above is Slimming World wedges with a drizzle of barbecue sauce and some reduced fat grated cheese.

Towards the end of the week we had our delivery from Gousto.  I do try and pick the healthy options from their menu.  As you're cooking from scratch they're typically not too bad for you anyway, in terms of Slimming World normally there's only one or two ingredients that I may need to syn or substitute.  The above photo or lamb meatballs and below are super chicken noodles, both using honey which I just synned.

Below is something that I like to eat when I just need a really good lunch that's going to see me through for quite a few hours or fun dinner.  It's the sort of meals every now and again that just make me feel like I'm eating normal food are not "diet food."  It's all psychological, if I feel like I'm eating something "diet" then I can sometimes feel like I'm being somehow deprived so this is good for that and what makes it even better is it's completely free on Slimming World.  Hilariously, generally I don't get through this any more.  What you see here I actually left the egg, one of the gammon pieces and a few of the wedges as my stomach is definitely shrunk a lot.

Another new find for the week is that Muller Light have a new multipack out with three summer berry yoghurt's and three raspberry and peach.  I do love that Muller always bring out new flavours as it means that I'm never bored of them.

Something else that is keeping me focused is looking at other peoples losses.  A huge inspiration for me has been someone called Kelly on Instagram.  Kelly lost seven stone and 44 weeks, that's an average of just over 2 pounds every week.  It shows me that this can be achieved, I just need to not give up.

Within this past week my mum got a Fit Bit so now between my husband (as he has one too) and my mum we do daily challenges which encourages me to move more.  My husband is very active so to be honest I'll probably never beat him but that doesn't stop me jogging on the spot just to beat my mum...!

So on that note I'll talk about my weigh in today which honestly, I've had a little cry about this morning.  At this point I can really tell that I've lost weight, my waist goes in like it should do now and I can see that my face is less of a bowling ball shape now(!)  Stepping on the scales this morning I couldn't have been more shocked to learn that I've lost 3 and a 1/2 pounds.  This brings my total to 16 and a half pounds in five weeks.  Not only that, it also brings me so close to the next weight bracket down.  I'm trying to pinpoint the reasons why it was quite a lot more than previous weeks and the only thing I can think of is the vegetables, cutting down on sweet treats for syns for sauces instead and moving a little more (but don't get my wrong, it's still not an awful lot.)  I wish I could bottle this feeling up because right now I feel amazing and I'm ready and raring to go for this next week.
