Slim Down Sunday: Week 29

So after virtually a melt down last week resulting in me cancelling my weigh in, once I had eaten what I liked on the Saturday I was ready to own it again this week.  I needed that time off, I just needed to not have to think about calories for a little while however I knew that whatever I had put on I would need to get rid of.  Also ideally I wanted to get shut of some "fresh fat" so that it felt like this week was worth it and not just one wasted that was fixing the last one.

I try to see every change and really take it in, the first being the pyjamas that you can see in the above photo.  Obviously they don't match but that's okay(!) Those pyjama bottoms were too snug to wear when I bought them and now they fall down even when I tie them tight but I love them!

My week consisted of a lot of Heck Chicken Italia sausages.  I know I've spoken about them before but for 180 calories I feel like I'm having something close to the food I used to eat, a little naughty, so I don't feel deprived.  They're good for any meal too so I will often have for breakfast or lunch.

On Monday I went up to Creative Academy+ Manchester for their Breakfast & Bl*ng event which was good.  It's always a pleasure to go up there and see everyone.  Julia jokingly put a 20% off sticker on me so I had to make it clear it was actually 24% of my body weight that I'd lost so it was amended accordingly!

I still get up at 5.30am for the gym every weekday morning (even when it's icy!)  I faff about for 45 minutes and then I'm there for 6.30am when they open.  It's hilarious really as when I was huge I had no energy to do anything, my back would ache and my joints would click as I moved.  Now I'm all bouncy and light, I can manage an hours work out and still be buzzing when I get home to the point where as I'll go for walks and purposely take myself places to get more exercise in.  The transformation in that sense is unreal, I buzz around my house and get a lot done too.  I do highly recommend getting a Fit Bit as being able to check that and see the calories burned etc has been amazing motivation, it would make a fantastic Christmas present as well.

I've been trying to find food that I will enjoy but fill me up with a lower calorie value.  The other day all I wanted was Micro Noodles so I decided to bulk it out with a ton of mushrooms which was a fantastic idea until I started eating it and realised that it bulked it out more than I was anticipating and I was stuffed but that's all good!  From my Slimming World days I remember that mushrooms speed weight loss so they're good to use.  I have also been eating a lot more fruit as well as vegetables this week.

Let's ignore the fact that on the lower of the two photos above, behind me is all of the stock I was sorting out in my home salon...  I did take this photo without the intention of putting it up on my blog but that's okay!  I wanted to show you a recent photo of my shoulders compared to before as I think there's quite a difference.  It's good for me to see this difference as although I can feel it, I know it's there it's easy to forget how far I've come.

Now, if you'd have asked me how I did this week I would have said that I would hopefully have worked off whatever I put on last week and then if I was really lucky, an extra pound as well.  I feel like you can tell when you get on the scales if it feels that you're a little lighter and I did.  The thing that completely threw me was that I weighed myself on Friday morning (naughty, I know) and it said that I had lost 2lbs so I was absolutely over the moon.  This all came crashing down when I weighed myself yesterday morning and it said that I was exactly the same as last week which made me wonder how I could put that 2lbs back on without a day.  I had two choices, I could go off the rails and threw all my hard work away for the week but something was telling me to just stick at it for one more day and see how today's weigh in went.

I was really nervous to weigh in this morning, once again I told myself that if it turned out that it was a pound off, I would be happy as my body was also trying to get shut of last week's fiasco.  I couldn't believe it when once again, that 2lbs was showing that it was off!  I was so delighted and relieved as I have been feeling like I've been virtually the same for a long time now so it's so encouraging to see my weight loss continuing again.  I am now up to 4 stone 11lbs (or 67lbs) lost in 29 weeks.  As I'm just 3lbs away from five stone, I hope to be extremely close or actually do it for next Sunday.  One thing for sure is that I finally feel the determination that I had a few weeks ago coming back.  I can do this.  I have to do this.  I will do this.
  • Every day we have a choice, it's a fresh start and the most important part from any healthy eating plan is to just try and make as many days, good ones.
  • Losing a pound a week is still over three and a half stone in a year.
  • If you're feeling particularly down about your weight, remember that if you stick to a balanced diet then by this time next week you could have dropped quite a few pounds, just the kick start you need to get going!  Even just by cutting down on treats you could make a difference, how good would that feel?!

Ask Me A Question: Part 1

I asked on my Facebook page if there were any questions you'd like to ask me as I thought it would be fun.  I feel like more so than ever you're getting to know my personality too and it's lovely!  I suppose I am on the quirky side so I was totally open for whatever you had for me but they're all pretty tame this time.  If anyone wants to ask me anything else, please send it to me through Facebook and I'd add it to the list for next time.

Laura Darby:
Hi do you do shellac nails with the cnd smoothing gel too???
I used CND Brisa Lite Smoothing Gel when it's required, it just depends on what the client needs.  If I feel that their nails will require that little extra strength or I need to fix a minor imperfection (such as a dip in the nail plate) then I will go ahead and use it.  I feel like it's an excellent system to have ready as an add on service and is really quick to apply.

Diane Melling:
Hi. I would like to know why you started making YouTube videos.  I watched them religiously when I was training and found them really helpful xx
Thanks Diane!  This probably sounds a little odd but I'd grown up watching my dad enjoy making little videos on the computer and editing them together.  I come from a family who like to draw and paint so when I found some nail art videos on You Tube and tried them out, I found it was something I enjoyed.  Although I am fairly basic with nail art I decided to use my interest of creating videos and combine it with my new interest in nails, six months later I was enrolled at college to study nail technology!

Kay Gilligan:
What inspired you to come into the beauty industry?
As I was saying above I feel like I just fell into all of this.  I always had an interest in make up and after my wedding I started having an amazing beauty therapist called Ruth (hi Ruth!) come around to my home regularly.  I got more and more into the treatments she offered and found it amazing how you can make someone feel good about themselves.  I feel like once you start your training you will literally never stop, it's fantastic.

Sheena Wallington:
Would you recommend a self employed nail business as a career (its tough out there) and if so, what do you believe can help it become and remain successful
Oh absolutely!  It's tougher than I ever even imagined to build a brand and a reputation for yourself.  When I left my full time job to pursue this as a career I was prepared for six months or so of little money but the reality was it was more like two years before I was earning properly.  You have to confidence in your abilities and truly believe you can do it as there's many times along the way that you will question if you have done the right thing.  It's hard when you're going through it but when you finally build a big enough business that you're earning properly, you'll realise how worth it all was and find yourself struggling to fit clients in.  Always believe in yourself no matter what, make sure that quitting is never an option too.

Anonymous:
Hi lovely lady

I'm Pm you regarding your recent post about asking a question.

I could do with some advice from yourself and the rest of the nail and beauty family if possible please?

I've been a therapist for 14 years and in that time I've worked in 3 salons. The last two have been my longest 7 and currently 6 years.

I'm currently really considering moving away from the salon and going Mobile!  There are many reason why I'm seriously considering this,
  • One the children - my eldest was born with a very poorly heart and it gets stressful and the guilt of working is a huge factor, childcare flexibility and weekends as a family.
  • Two - health reasons (stress with work and depression from my traumatic experience with my eldest being born)
Where I currently work is lovely and two of the other girls have been there with me since the beginning, but now we are more established running for nearly 7 years the boss is becoming a complete nightmare and things are slipping. Squeezing clients into spaces that are not there making us then run late for clients booked in said slot, no lunch breaks at all and her continuous mood swings are making us walk on egg shells!  We have regular meetings and tell her are concerns etc and they get taken on board initially but then it's back to where we were!

Unfortunately and I like to think I get on with everyone but there is one employee I can not stand who's recently joined us and I know it sounds harsh but she is one of these who thinks she knows it all and has been there done it or know someone who has. She's very unprofessional in many levels, swears like a trooper, never works as a team member and is extremely lazy and continuously on her phone but the boss thinks the sun shines out of her arse!

I'm currently employed and my hourly pay is £6.80 ph and the last time I had a pay rise was 5 years ago. Financially this a big factor too as I feel with my experience and big clientele etc I should be on a better hourly wage?

So as you can see there is lots of reasons for me to go and there's lots more to mention but I'd be here all day.   I do a bit of mobile currently and for instance one client I do I earn £75 in 1.5 hours. In the salon it takes me 3 days to earn this! So the mobile side of things is obviously financially more appealing.

My concern is leaving that financial security of the salon. What if going mobile I don't get enough weekly clients to financially support us? Obviously I have a huge client base at the salon and I don't want to be nicking clients as its not professional. There maybe some clients that will want to come with me and others not as they like that going into the salon experience which I totally get.

What if I doesn't work? Finding another job?! I've always walked into my jobs through reputation and I've never had a CV and this totally scares me as I have no idea on how to do one.

So really the main question with above in mind, after 14 years being salon based would you go mobile?   Sorry I totally waffled on. Any advice greatly appreciated!
Oooooooo it's a tough one as it depends on your overall financial position too.  When I left my full time job I was fortunate to be able to just about live off my husband's wage if we cut back everything and lived very basic until it picked up.  It was tough going as we had to wave goodbye to quite a few luxuries but it was totally worth it, I even sold a lot of my belongings on Ebay to try and make ends meet.  As you say, your client base at the salon is huge and it sounds like you have a fantastic reputation but you can't be taking any of their business deliberately.  That aside, it is natural that some clients will come to you as they book for you, not the salon but this can't be relied upon.

If it was me, I would gather some savings together over the next few weeks or months and go for it.  You will truly never know unless you try, it sounds like it would be better for your health and you can work around your children as well.  Yes it's somewhat of a gamble but everything in life is and if you're determined, you'll make it work and reap the rewards of a lot higher wage, even if the client base you start with is a lot smaller.  Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

Steph Shields:
I'd like to know if you will ever teach? x
Honestly, I believe I have the capability to teach as in that I enjoy helping others and watching them grow however in terms of skill I'm definitely not good enough although I can do a decent set of nails if you get me?!

Dee Rosewarne:
How did your husband propose marriage?
We were 21 and had been together a year when he booked a few nights in Paris for our first anniversary.  He kept telling me not to expect a proposal and not to get my hopes up.  On our anniversary he took me to the Eiffel Tower but it was windy and I refused to go up there.  He had asked me whether I would want him to be down on one knee when he did propose and I had said that if it was in public, I wouldn't.  Sat on a bench under the Eiffel Tower he said to me 'Karen will you make me the happiest man alive and marry me?'   (I wonder how many of you went all mushy reading that?!)

I actually really enjoyed doing that!  Thanks so much for everyone who asked a question, I didn't ask for questions to be a 'know it all' like 'oh I know the answer to everything' because I absolutely don't but I thought some of you might be interested in reading the answers!

Slim Down Sunday: Week 28

Let's officially call this week "the week that I turned into the Hungry Caterpillar" (amazing children's book) because I swear if I was able to eat it, I would have.  I don't know what got into me but right from the start of the week I just couldn't seem to shake the feeling of hunger.  I definitely eat enough but no matter what I always wanted more and I just couldn't get it out of my mind.  Of course, as this is such a mental process it's highly likely I wasn't hungry but it's hard to work that out when you're in the middle of it.

I should have known this week was going to be a problem for me as I went to the pub last Sunday and had the meal that you see below, cheese, onion and potato pie.  That pie is huge and I typically never finish all of it along with the chips but of course I snorted the lot without a second glance, this should have been warning signs then.

Since I couldn't get rid of this feeling of "right, now what else can I eat?" I was trying to find meals that weren't too heavy on calories but would hopefully keep me happy such as what you see below which is Heck Chicken Italia sausages (180 calories for all of those sausages!) as well as the spaghetti at 107 calories and the Tesco's own waffle for 85 calories.  This is effectively a children's dinner with not a vegetable in sight but I was willing to do anything to keep me on track.

By Thursday I was starting to realise that I was losing the battle this week but reasoning that although I was eating over my calories, the fact I do an hours workout at the gym every week day morning would fix everything.  I have however noticed that now I'm a lot smaller the weight loss is not as forgiving and it is definitely getting harder but that's okay.

Despite all my best efforts to try and please my food cravings, the truth is, I just wanted to have a food binge - there, now I've said it.  I just wanted to go back to the good old (fat) days where as I wandered into the kitchen as many times as I wanted and ate to my heart's content.  I couldn't get that thought of my mind no matter how hard I tried.

Eventually, Saturday morning came around and it was time to make a decision.  This weight loss is my rules, I started this so I say what goes, I'm doing it on my terms and you know what?  I'm doing pretty damn fantastic so that's when I made an executive decision and decided to cancel this week.  I said to myself "right Karen, enough is enough, eat what you like for this weekend.  No weigh ins.  You need to fix this urge in your head as it's gone on for days now and not showing any signs of going.  Get back on this on Monday."  I figured this could potentially last weeks and my weight loss journey completely collapse around me so it was time to take action.  The moment I decided to do this, the relief was immense, literally like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders.

The first thing I did was had some biscuits that I had been wanting, I then went to the co-op and bought some delicious fresh baguettes and ham and made a sandwich.  For my evening meal we went to Nandos, I just craved normality away from calorie counting.

I won't lie, I absolutely stuffed my face yesterday and mid afternoon something amazing happened, I was content.  The hunger that has plagued me all week had gone to the point where as I actually said to myself that I was ready to get back onto eating well again, I didn't even need to wait until Monday, I was keen to start back today which is what I'm doing.

I'm pleased with how I've handled this week, I'll even say I'm proud of myself.  I finally realised that I needed to address how I felt, the moment I did that I released it.  I have a new eagerness and a fire in my belly for more weight loss again so although I will probably be working off some extra chub from the overeating, it's over and done with and will be more than gone by next Sunday so why let it bother me?  Onwards and downwards!

NOTD: Foxes With Glasses?!

I couldn't really call this post anything other than foxes with glasses, "call a spade a spade" and all that!  I've got a bit of a soft spot for foxes, I just think they're ace.

Having bought some new glasses a couple of months ago I noticed that bizarrely the throw I bought from Primark with foxes on had almost identical specs on!  (I've just taken this photo now to show you!) I realise that this is all fairly irrelevant information to you but it humoured me immensely!

Everything was handpainted for this design apart from the glasses which I used MoYou London Hipster 07 plate for quickness.  I'm pretty pleased with how they turned out, it was just something for me to focus on to keep me away from chocolate for a little while, truth be known!

My Work: Blue With Black Aztec Style Design

Simone is a huge nail art lover and we spend a lot of time talking about nails in between her appointments.  She's the type of client that is a dream to work with (and I'm not just saying that as I know she will definitely read this!) because she's always open to suggestions and willing to be more daring with her nail art than most.  I suggested a design on Instagram and she loved it but didn't want an almond shape or the rhinestones just in case they caught on something so I adapted it for her.

For this design I used:
  • CND Shellac in Cerulean Sea & Black Pool
  • NSI Sparkling Glitter in Aqua
  • CND Additive in Shimmer Silver
  • Lecente Fireworks Glitter in Spark
  • CND Additive in Amethyst Flash

I painted the blue nails first and once cured, I faded the CND Additive in Amethyst Flash into the tips.  I used a fine detailing brush to apply the Aztec print.  For the index finger I mixed a glitter paste of CND Additive in Shimmer Silver (limited edition) and Lecente Fireworks Glitter in Spark.  I always do glitter nails last once the designs on the other nails are top coated and cured just in case.  There are two black nails (the thumb was also black but the glitter, NSI Sparkling Glitter in Aqua faded from the cuticle area instead) which I think finish the design off perfectly.

Slim Down Sunday: Week 27

I'm not even sure where to start with this week so here goes nothing!  This week started off so well in terms of everything but food but that was okay.  I met 18 followers in Birmingham and enjoyed an amazing overnight stay at Fairlawns Spa.

I never wanted to be that person during this process that wouldn't eat anything and made others feel uncomfortable as they all ate what they liked and I didn't.  Since I'm so strict on myself usually it's times like this that I throw the rule book out and I will eat and drink what I like.  We had a three course meal at the spa and they had unlimited freshly baked scones and brownies all day which were amazing.  I also had a few Koppabergs as well as Southern Comfort and lemonade (I was fuming they didn't have diet lemonade but never mind!)  I even had a Kit Kat Chunky (the peanut butter one, just for reference) for breakfast on the drive over to Stockport to pick my friend up and head down to the spa!

I had two treatments whilst I was there, neither were anything amazing but I think that's more to do with personal preference than the spa's fault and I would definitely go back there.  When I returned on Monday evening I was ready to get back on track with my calories and pull back any gain that I had and started my routine back at the gym on Tuesday morning.

Somewhere in the middle of the week, life got messy.  I can't talk about this publicly but it resulted in me being very down but I still managed to hold onto the reins in terms of my calories in fact, Thursday I only managed just over 500 calories which of course isn't good for you but I couldn't have managed anything more.  On a side note, like a typical woman driver I managed to reverse my car into a post at Creative Academy+ Manchester that day so it now has damage on it which just topped my week off.  Instead of eating, my friends said for me to go and do some retail shopping so me being me took it to the extreme and went and bought a Michael Kors bag in one of my favourite colours!

This probably sounds ridiculous but I learnt that I could do something this week that was never possible before.  That is that I can now jump into my husband's arms and he can carry me!  Previously I was always too heavy, he was unable to carry me over the threshold when we got married so this is a novelty to me.  I often say to him "I feel thin today" and it's so hard to describe but it's amazing to me.

Many people say to me "you must feel amazing!" and I do.  I was trying to explain to my husband how easy I find things now and my best explaination is when you're on the cross trainer on a hard level, your legs and arms are really pushing themselves hard and someone comes and puts it down to level one.  All of a sudden your whizzing around with no problems at all, that's what it's like to me.  Previously the tops of my thighs were so big that I struggled to put my knees together completely and keep them shut without a big effort, now I can do that no problems.  I can squeeze past cars in car parks without having to second guess if I will fit.  Even just being at the spa in a swimming costume allowing everyone to see what I looked like was a huge accomplishment because I'm finally to a point where as I can accept myself a little.

So onto the weigh in, I always hope and aim for 3lbs each week.  I realise that this is a big ask but most weeks I've been able to manage it.  Of course this week was different because I only had five days that I was actually calorie counting but I still tried my best.  This week I lost 2lbs bringing me to a total of 4 stone 9lbs lost (or 65lbs) in 27 weeks.  I forgot to include this comparison photo last week so here it is now, hopefully you can see the difference.  I'm now only 5lbs away from my five stone reward, my Michael Kors watch!

My Work: Elegant Mint Nails

Jen comes to me every two weeks for infills of her enhancements and new CND Shellac.  Jen came to me ready for a fresh set of nails last night and I tried my best to entice her with nail ideas.  I'm proud of how far she's come, she came to me from another tech having only ever had constant pink and whites and now I couldn't even tell you when the last time was that she had them.

As Jen goes on holiday tomorrow she wanted something brighter and has been recently going for a lot of oranges and greens.  We decided to use the same glitter l&p mix that I custom blended for the Cinderella nails for another client as she loved it (it was mint glitter, Lecente Stardust in Milky Way, silver glitter and mylar flakes) and teamed that with my favourite opaque pink that I also mix myself (NSI Attraction in Radiant Pink and Purely Pink Masque - 50/50)  I also used CND Shellac in Sage Scarf along with a glitter mix for a rhinestone effect on the little finger.  Finally finishing off with MoYou London Fashionista Plate 04 on the thumb and ring finger.

I do adore these nails and more importantly, Jen does!  Don't forget to follow my Facebook page for future updates.  I'm also on Instagram and Twitter - search for @liverpollashes

Soap & Glory Christmas Gifts

When the lovely ladies at Soap & Glory got in touch to meet up to show me their Christmas releases, I could have cried in my pillow as the date they were in the north was whilst I was in Corfu.  It was so kind of them to send me a few treats to try out for myself as I adore Soap & Glory as a brand and truly believe that everything they put their name to is fantastic quality (particularly their Brow Archery - amazing!)

Week 26: Slim Down Sunday

I think I worried some of you with last week's post but you know I speak from my heart with them and I was truly struggling.  I am a worrier and I worried that I had lost the plot with it all after doing so well within 25 weeks.  I want you all to know when I'm struggling, if you're in the process of losing weight too then you need to know that I'm not perfect and that I will still over eat on occasion but thankfully I work out hard to correct any over indulgences.

This week was a massive deal to me as I was so close to the next stone bracket down.  I've been dreaming of seeing that number - even the number I started the week on was a dream a couple of months ago - but this one was a big one as I can't remember the last time I saw it.

Thankfully I woke up on Monday morning with a new sense of focus, I couldn't have been happier, I knew I could crack this and get a decent weight loss.  I honestly owe so much to the creators of the My Fitness Pal app.  For a free app, it's been the key to my success.  Of course it's taken my determination and the support of you all has been incredible (wow just typing that makes me choke up) but honestly, I never expected the love I've received from across the globe to something so personal to me.  It's made me realise that so many people are battling this too.

My week has been spent trying to push myself as much as I can at the gym and keep away from sweet foods as much as I can as this is a huge downfall for me.  I find that the weeks I dodge sweet food always work out better for me, I tend to have better losses as I just tend to not want to overeat savoury foods.

I was excited to go to Primark this week and I was actually able to get into a pair of UK size 16 lounge pants (although I'm probably currently somewhere between a 16 on a good day, and a 18!)  I still have to pinch myself that I am able to go and get clothes from all of the high street stores as I used to be a UK size 24 so that's five sizes down!  Every few weeks I raid my wardrobe and look for clothes that were just about not quite fitting and now they fit, it's so much fun.  I haven't bought an awful lot of clothes as yet, just a few bits to keep me going as I pass through the sizes as I just don't see much of a point yet.

On Friday my husband was lucky enough to earn some tickets to be VIPs at the o2 box in the Manchester Arena to watch 50 Cent which was an absolute hoot but they had loads of amazing food laid out for us with unlimited drinks, it was all so tempting that it would have been rude not to have tried a little bit of delicious food but I stuck to Diet Coke to save on calories!

Onto this weeks weight in... I'll bet your eyeballs looked at the above photo for a moment or two.  When I told my friend that today I was going to reveal my previous and current weight, she was shocked.  As I said earlier, weight is such a personal topic.  You may look at either number and think that both are far too heavy or equally, dream that either number was you.  For me, I wasn't happy and it affected me so deeply that I've held back from so much of my life because of it.  I've taken a photo of every single weigh in and I have been creating for a collage of every one for me to look back on this journey.  I particularly like looking at the other information on my new scales and seeing that drop.  If you work in pounds, I was 271lbs and now I'm just over 208lbs as of this weeks weigh in with a loss of just under 4lbs so I'm just short of 4 stone 7lbs (63lbs) lost in total in 26 weeks.

I know I didn't need to share something so private with you all, there's a tiny part of me that may be embarrassed but you know what? That's not me anymore and I need to let it go so here I am, that's what I was and I am no longer.  If knowing what I weighed and what I am now in exactly six months pushes you to make the changes you want to make, then here it is.  Here is what's possible and here is how much your life can change if you want it as badly as I did.  I no longer shy away from opportunities and most importantly, from life.  My target weight is 12 stone, I am five foot four (on a good day) so technically that still makes me overweight.  My friends say they think I will go past this but it was my original ultimate goal and I am still aiming for this which will be a total loss of 103lbs or 7 stone 5lbs.  So now that this week is over and done with, let's get cracking heading to my five stone loss goal!

My Work: Dove Grey & Silver

Having enjoyed her Cinderella nails last month, Rachael returned for another set but wanted something nude she said.  In the end after looking through my new Shellac colour pop ring, CND Shellac in Cityscape caught her eye.

Apologies in advance if it's you that I'm talking about (and by all means, message me and I'll credit you in this post) but I had saved a photo of a nail combination with a colour similar to Cityscape so as Rachael has similar taste to me, the moment she saw it, she wanted it!

I used MoYou London Princess Plate 14 and Konad Special Polish in white on the index finger, Lecente Silver Ultra Fine Glitter on her ring finger and mixed a glitter paste for the faux rhinestone look on her little finger.

Playing Around With Fireworks

So of course, the only fireworks that you should be playing around with is the recently launched Lecente Fireworks Collection.  I decided to have a little play with them this evening in my summerhouse whilst a load of fireworks went off outside (obviously some have gotten the date wrong, never mind!) but it was a very fitting background sound.

I used four CND Shellac shades (left to right of the photo below) Peacock Plume, Fine Vermilion, Night Glimmer and Wildfire  to create the designs.  On each colour pop I patted every single Lecente Firework glitter into the sticky layer in a random order.  Applying a layer of CND Shellac in Clearly Pink and curing, I applied a layer of Black Pool over it and allowed it to air dry for a minute so that it thickens.  Really my main goal was for a fuss free firework like the far left colour pop but I carved a few different designs for variation just to show you.
