Year In Review: 2016

Ahhh where do I start?  Honestly 2016 has flipped my world upside down on so many levels.  I started off the year married to a kind man that I was no longer in love with, in a lovely house that we built up to have lovely decor and pretty things.  By the end of the year I've ended up moving 200 miles away, I'm with a man I truly love, in a fantastic relationship and in a house that is more simple with a few pretty things but being happier than ever.  It's crazy how things go, I am devastated to be soon start the process of divorce - I'm a traditional person and I believe in making things work but if you marry someone who doesn't listen that you don't really stand a chance.

Professionally I am delighted with yet another year of progress.  I have gained 1500 followers on Facebook alone in 2016.  My blog is now getting around 20,000 - 23,000 views in a single month - that's a lot of eyeballs!!

In February I was delighted to showcase the new Lecente Glitters at Creative Academy Manchester's Show-A-Thon.  I was also honoured to be asked to create all of Lecente's introduction videos of their new collections, it's such a pleasure to be asked.

April onwards was when life started getting rocky as I prepared to leave my lovely home and even more so, my beloved cats.  At this point I am still without my cats and I am looking to bring them with me to Cardiff in the New Year.  I also had this huge holiday booked with my husband to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Palm Springs and Las Vegas.  Since it was all paid for and we were on sort of good terms we went together as friends but this was very difficult at times.  When I returned I started to then move my belongings out and down to Cardiff.  I have tried to continue to blog and keep my social media going throughout this time although I never said a word to anyone who wasn't a close family member or friend.  The hardest thing however was telling my clients, I broke down and cried in front of them at almost every person I told but my situation with their appointments would be changed.

My boyfriend Rich is fantastic, the sort of man who takes control of situations and picks me up when I'm down - exactly what I was looking for.  When the invite came to go to the Sweet Squared 10th Birthday Party in August he was like "let's go!" so we did.  At this point I had put a lot of the five stone I lost last year, back on but I went anyway because I can't allow myself to hide away any longer.

Another personal achievement for me is to learn to become some sort of a vague stepmum for Rich's son.  I don't have any children of my own and I warned Rich that I'm not "child friendly" from the start and he said I would be great at it.  He is 9 years old and a good kid.  Thankfully he took to me immediately and listens to me although I really have no experience of children - I am the youngest in my family and the only nephew I have emigrated to Australia at 18 months old with my brother and his wife last year.  He refers to me as "Darling" as that what he's heard his dad call me so it's just stuck!

At the end of November Rich and I went to Las Vegas - the second time for me this year - to go to Go Pro 2016.  This was a marketing conference over three days with many Multi millionaires talking about their success.  Rich was already going so I basically tagged along.  It was there I made a decision, I wanted to fulfil a dream that I had had last year.  What you may not know is that I'm a candle and home fragrance junkie, I'm obsessed with it.  Last year I looked into producing my own wax melt brand.  I spent hundreds of pounds on the ingredients, fragrances, packaging, colouring and equipment and then hit a huge grinding halt because in June last year the laws changed surround packaging of wax melts and it meant it was very complicated to label and produce them.  After a long time getting lost online trying to work out my plan of action, I gave up on the idea.  Cut back to sitting in Las Vegas at this three day conference and I suddenly thought, producing my own brand may have been too much for me but become a consultant for a huge American brand I love would be perfect.  I returned home and signed up to be a Scentsy Consultant almost immediately.  Being a consultant is a dream for me as I got to talk about something I'm completely passionate about.  If you want to join my Facebook group - click here.

Finally, my year ended with being able to see my beloved cats on Christmas Day.  It might be silly to some but those little monsters are my babies.  Cue the proud mama photos of Henry and Poppy with their Christmas presents.

Henry just looks ace with his collar and tie, doesn't he?!  Totally suitable for a job interview!  I took turkey and ham for them, hence the tongue!

Rich and I had a lovely Christmas Day with my parents and another piece of happy news was that my brother, his wife and my nephew have moved back to the UK from Australia.  We then went back home to enjoy Boxing Day with his son.

So what will 2017 hold for me?  My main priority is to be happy, that has to be the ultimate goal and I refuse to settle for any less.  I can also foresee Scentsy becoming huge for me, I've had so much interest in it, its incredible.  I can envision so many salons taking it on as an inexpensive system that adds a lovely glow and fragrance to treatment rooms and the lack of flame means it's completely safe to be left unattended, unlike traditional candles.  LiverpoolLashes will continue to grow in its 7th year, hopefully at the rate it's currently been and if not, more.  It's all about relying on you all to spread the word too which I know you already do to both clients and fellow therapists.  I also need to lose the weight I have gained this year to get myself back to being confident again - I will do this.

Wishing you the most fabulous 2017!! Karen xx

NOTD: Bright Blue and Silver

I redid my nails with the new CND collection, New Wave ready for my usual comparison video (if you missed it, click here.)  When it came to choosing the shades it was a no brainer for me that I would go for Blue Eyeshadow as the bright blue and cream finish is just mind blowing.

Honestly, I wanted to just do them plain.  I said to my nail tech friend "I always feel obliged to have all different nails and I'm sick of it, I just want them all the same this time" - I don't know if any of you can relate to that?

I chose Lecente Glitters in Silver Holographic and Silver Holographic Multi Glitz and focused on the cuticle area with the Multi Glitz and used the other silver to fill in any gaps and bring it down to the tip gradually.  My natural nails are long at the moment but we shall see how long it lasts!

CND New Wave Collection Shellac and Vinylux

Ever since I posted the photo of my nails wearing CND Creative Play in Royalista I've been craving a bright cobalt blue, it's vibrant, fun and trendy.  Thankfully not only did CND answer my payers with the New Wave collection on the cobalt blue front, they also came up with more new exciting shades that are on par with it.

This new collection consists of the following shades:
  • Jelly Bracelet
  • Video Violet
  • Ecstasy
  • Blue Eyeshadow
  • Banana Clips
  • Pink Leggings
As I'm a child of the 80s, the names alone take me back to then I loved it!  All of the above shades are available in CND Shellac and Vinylux apart from Video Violet which is exclusive to Shellac.

As usual I have made my comparison video with the existing range to show you how they are against the older shades.

I hope you've enjoyed the video!  Personally my favourites are Blue Eyeshadow, Video Violet and Jelly Bracelet but they are all genuinely lovely.

Client Christmas Presents 2016

Honestly, this year was tough.  Money is a horrible thing to talk about but when you're rebuilding your life after a separation, budgets are tight and you have to make it work.  I am a crafty person so I quite enjoy making things.  Previously I have bought all of my clients presents based on their personalities etc but this year it needed to be more of a gesture and a thank you for their business.

I bought a big tub of Celebrations along with a box of candy canes, silver ribbon from Tiger, little paper pouches and some tags.  Finally, I ordered some little bells in a huge bag from Amazon.

All in all my little gestures cost me around 60p each.  Everyone seemed so touched that I had took the time to put them together and I was happy to give them out with a handwritten tag.

If I don't post again before Christmas, have a lovely time and a fantastic 2017.  I'll be on snapchat as usual throughout, details below!

NOTD: Red, White & Snowflakes

You know I love red nails and I fight the urge to have them every single time I do my fingernails because I can hardly do a blog post on them every time(!) I do however cave and constantly have red on my toes to compensate.  I toyed with the idea of admitting defeat and doing red in some sort of design since it's nearly Christmas and eventually gave in to my red urges!

I choose CND Shellac in Red Baroness for my thumb, index and little fingers which is normally a colour that gets overlooked for Wildfire or Tartan Punk but is absolutely stunning.  My middle and ring finger has Cream Puff on it with Lecente Stardust Glitter in Red Ruby over it which gives a hint of a red toned shimmer over the white.  I then used Sugared Spice and my Favourite Lecente brush S1 to paint the snowflakes on, finishing a few of them off with a dotting tool.

I have to say I already know the combination I'm going for next time but I had to hold back for my Christmas nail fix and for the time being, I kind of like them!

Slim Down Sunday: Week 83 - 84

Firstly, thanks so much for all of the lovely comments on my previous Slim Down Sunday post.  I was overwhelmed with the support both publicly and by private message.  As you know, a few days after I posted I went to Las Vegas for a week with my boyfriend Rich.  I shared each day on Snapchat so if you're not already following me for my random updates - search for "liverpoollashes"

I never wanted to make excuses as for why I then went onto not lose weight, of course I would find it difficult on holiday so I just ate what I fancied and tried to be mindful that the more I ate whilst I was away, the more I would put on.  I feel like it's the same with Christmas but I was ready to start losing my weight again so I didn't want to make excuses and then leave it another month because of it.

On the plane I have to say that the tray table struggled to go down completely because of my stomach.  How embarrassing that I have once again gotten back to that stage but it's the truth.  Luckily the belt fit just about so I was relieved about that.  I have been on a plane that the table didn't come down very much at all to the point where as I had to just hold my tray of food whilst eating it.  The world isn't made for anyone bigger than a UK size 16 or 18, that's just my opinion.  At the moment I'm probably back at 18 - 20, just for reference.  I had gotten down to nearly a 14.

Anyway, I weighed myself the morning after I flew back and then weighed myself this morning.  I am pleased to say I have lost 3lbs of the 5lbs I gained during holiday.  Another week of behaving (as I've only been back four days) and that should be gone and I'll be able to start shedding fresh pounds of chub.

I am back using My Fitness Pal, it's such a fab app and so easy to use.  I am trying to drink a lot more water, even if it's flavoured (and sugar free) as it just helps with that bloated feeling.  I feel like by starting now I am getting ahead of the game for January.  Anyway, I'm back at home down in South Wales for the week now so I am back to being able to prepare my own meals (every fortnight I go back up north and stay at my parents house so it's more difficult to keep control of my food.) Wish me luck for next week!
  • Every day we have a choice, it's a fresh start and the most important part from any healthy eating plan is to just try and make as many days, good ones.
  • Losing a pound a week is still over three and a half stone in a year.
  • If you're feeling particularly down about your weight, remember that if you stick to a balanced diet then by this time next week you could have dropped quite a few pounds, just the kick start you need to get going!  Even just by cutting down on treats you could make a difference, how good would that feel?!

Friends With Benefits

Friends with benefits seemed like the perfect title for this blog post.  No it's not in the way you're thinking but when it comes to having any sort of a specialised skill whether it's nails, beauty, hairdressing, plastering, plumbing or whatever, you can guarantee you'll come across people who think that because you're friendly, you'll be doing it for them for free.

Hilariously this is a photo of me and my amazing friend Jade.  She certainly isn't someone to take advantage of our friendship but I like a photo in each blog post so here is one...!

I am a very giving person, if I have something that would be better with someone else, they can take it.  If I can help any new techs out with advice or information, as many of you know, I do it.  I've had full blown conversations with thousands of nail techs in my six years of LiverpoolLashes to help them understand a technique or problem they're having.

However when it comes to expecting a free set of nails or beauty treatment, true friends expect to pay, it's as simple as that.  You have spent hundreds and hundreds of hours learning the skills and gaining the certificates, not to mention the thousands in training, products and equipment.  This one service they're after might only cost you X amount of money but it's the principal as well as if you do it once, you can bet you'll be doing it again.

It's hard to make someone realise who does a "regular job" aka - a job that is paid by an employer (for example, a call centre worker) who wouldn't typically be able to offer you anything within that field why you must charge for your skills, product and education.

I'm really talking about mainly those who do their skill full time, it's their bread and butter.  It's not just a top up of money on top of their full time job, this is how we earn our money.  They wouldn't be expected to turn up to the office / shop / factory or whatever and do a couple of hours for nothing as they potentially wouldn't be able to afford to do that, neither can we.

The final point is this, my client base is very well established, I have clients who have been with me from within months of me qualifying and many I consider as friends, as they do me.  By offering free services or hugely reduced ones, not only am I dramatically reducing my wage but it's almost like I'm ranking them as to how good a friend they are to me, where would I draw a line?

For all the reasons above, the only person that gets a free service is my mum.  She's had to put up with me all of my life and to be quite honest with you, I should be paying her to do her nails or beauty treatments because I know how much of a pain I was (and still am.)  Everyone else can put their hands in their pockets and show that they understand I am business, like everyone else I need money to pay bills and I charge what I'm worth.

I'll finish with this, the perks of having friends with the industry is that they will let you try their new products first in my case, often before the nation or even worldwide release.  You can also come to me in your pjs, no make, baby dribble on your shoulder or whatever the case may be without a batter of an eyelid as I'll be in pjs and slippers too.  I will accept your last minute cancellation a tiny bit happier because I know your circumstances and I know you'd hate to let me down.  I will be extra patient when you take ages to decide on a colour as I know if you're with a stranger you wouldn't bounce between a peach nude and a pink nude for half an hour with them.

I wrote this post as I know many therapists can understand where I'm coming from, I get many questions by private message as to how to deal with it. Also perhaps it's food for thought for those around you.

My Work: Navy & Gold

Rachael came to me to have her nails done for her Christmas party.  Her dress was going to be navy with gold shoes so somewhere in the mix she wanted Chrome on them.

I used CND Shellac in Indigo Frock and Sugared Spice on her.  The Lecente chrome I actually went for was the silver version as it gave more of an overall paler gold chrome finish.

It drives me bananas that Indigo Frock often looks black on photos but we all know it's a blue with a grey tone to it!  Anyway, classic finish but not too Christmassy, she's saving the true Christmas nails for the big day!

My Work: Gold Sparkles

Beth came to me as a treat to get her nails done.  Due to the type of job she does, she didn't want anything that stands out too much in terms of colour but told me she loves glitter.

I used CND Shellac in Beau and then applied Lecente Glitter in Sleigh Bells (it was limited edition but hopefully it will return to their line at some point again, a good alternative would be Sand.) I used Shellac Clearly Pink over the glitter to seal it and cured it.  I then used my Lecente S1 brush and Shellac Cream Puff to pain the little stars.

Beth seemed thrilled with the result of her "girly nails" ready for going ice skating tonight.  I do love the simplicity of them but they're pretty and festive.

NOTD: Festive Navy

I am going to Las Vegas today and I wanted to do nails that are glitzy but also festive without being too Christmassy (if you get what I mean.)  I brainstormed what I wanted for a ridiculous amount of time as I don't know about you but my biggest pet peeve is having nails on holiday that I don't like because I can't change them!

liverpoollashes liverpool lashes festive navy nails nail of the day cnd shellac indigo frock inglot circles discs lecente silver holographic multi glitz glitter fireworks spark beau

I settled for navy (because you know I would have gone with red but I fought the urge!) so I chose CND Shellac in Indigo Frock as well as Silver Chrome and Beau.  I have Indigo Frock on my thumb, middle and little fingers.  I applied Silver Chrome to my ring middle and then a mix of Lecente Silver Holographic Multi Glitz and Spark Firework Glitter over.  Using the same two glitters I mixed a glitter paste and using my Lecente S2 brush to draw the detail on my thumb and Christmas tree on my middle finger.  Finally I used Beau and these nail art discs from Inglot on my index finger.  Sidenote: I've never used these discs before but they're super smooth on the nail and look fantastic.  I bought them from Poland last December and the name on the back says '32 Ozdoby do Ciala I Paznokci' if that helps.

I really love these nails which is a relief so I can go away happy, I'm sure you all know that feeling!

CND New Wave Collection

Finally there is talk of a new collection being launched with CND and it looks to be another exciting one.  The CND New Wave Collection is bright, bold with a little bit of a retro vibe.

Launching in January 2017, the collection consists of:
  • Video Violet
  • Pink Leggings
  • Blue Eyeshadow
  • Jelly Bracelet
  • Banana Clips
  • Ecstasy

All shades are available in both Shellac and Vinylux.

I do think the names are hilarious, taking me back to my youth (I'm an 80's child, what can I say) and I'm keen to see the finishes of each shade as you never know by these cartoon style photos really.  I think I may already love Blue Eyeshadow though as if it looks like the bottle, its going to be stunning.

What are your initial thoughts on this collection?

Slim Down Sunday: Weeks 70 - 82

Honestly?  Where do I start?  This is the post I've been dreading but I've known it was coming.  I'm ashamed and heartbroken, I'm very annoyed with myself and I know I've let myself down.  I never know when I'm writing about myself what to share.  I'm an open person, if you ask me something then I give you an honest answer but I never know if anyone is that bothered about the person I am.  I'm not being funny when I say that either but I know you're mostly here for the nails and that's fair enough!

Anyway, I've mentioned on my Facebook page and in passing I've had a tough year.  My life this year has done a complete 180 on everything I ever knew because at the start of 2016 I made the decision to separate from my husband after ten years.  Wow, just writing that down kills me because although it was my decision, he's such a lovely man but it just wasn't right.  We are both 31 and I knew that we were young enough to start again.  Is this an excuse - I'm not sure - as to why I've struggled once again with my weight.  I'm presuming it's an excuse but the reality is I have felt like I am just desperately trying to keep all aspects of myself in some sort of order and my weight has spiralled out of control again.  My personal life has been rocky as I worked out my next steps moving forward.

Separating after such a long time together is definitely a grieving process.  I am grieving for the life I had, the loss of that person that you knew so well and your world turning upside down.  Everything I ever knew has gone, like it never existed.  It's easy to forget that although it was my decision entirely in this case, I was only following my heart, being true to myself and I am still suffering a huge loss to my life that of course in time, will heal.

I am however, lucky enough to have met my lovely boyfriend Rich and together with my parents and a close handful of friends he has helped picked me up when I have fallen to pieces.  (Cue the tears at the thought, I'm such a girl.)  If you follow me on Snapchat (username- liverpoollashes) you'll know Rich pretty well as he's always on it.  Anyway, to add to all the changes going on, I've moved 200 miles away to near Cardiff to be with him but travel fortnightly back up north to keep my client base going there as well as try to see my family and friends.  I miss my cats terribly as we are slowly trying to make arrangements to bring them down here with me.

At the start of the year I had lost a staggering 76lbs (nearly five and a half stone) and I felt amazing and looked so different to what I looked like at the start of 2015.  I'm so gutted to tell you that I've put on a whooping 3 stone (42lbs) since the start of the year.  I'm so embarrassed that I have once again let my issues with food take hold of me again and I'm back to binge eating.  I know there's no point dwelling on it as I just need to kick myself up the backside and get on with it.

January 2015                                  December 2015
I have to tell you this which is almost laughable though, Rich himself has lost 7 stone and is now a Weight Watchers Leader in Cardiff.  I'm there at most of his classes so if you were local and joined we would have a hoot.  Anyway, despite him being a leader he still has his issues with food so understands me but I know he can't help if I eat in secret.

I'm telling you all this because talking to you previously was how I got as far as I did.  I'm mortified  and heartbroken that I didn't manage to keep it going as I was convinced I had cracked it but as many of us know, take your eye off the ball and the weight creeps on.  I need put these weight gains to a grinding halt and start losing what I've gained.  I do however have huge obstacles ahead, firstly being that on Tuesday I am going to Las Vegas for a week.  Second of course is Christmas but I didn't let that stop me last year and continued to lose pretty much throughout.

So let me tell you my plan, I'm back to calorie counting and I have been for the majority of the last week.  I could of course follow Weight Watchers - I am not currently a member but living with a leader if I decide to switch then I know he can guide me.  For now however, I will stick to what I know.  I need to get back into the habit of being more active again as I know this will boost my confidence as I do feel myself retreating back into my shell again and wanting to hide.

I've written this post, not for sympathy as I have done this to myself but in the hope that it will trigger the strength to carry on once again slimming down.  I know that Vegas will be a struggle but hopefully I will eat more mindfully.  I have a lot to talk about and although I obviously don't want to make my separation completely public, I have even considered writing about it in a way to help others who may be going through the same thing.  I am also considering talking about what I refer to as my 'dark time' which happened back in 2012/2013 and when I actually started the blog part of LiverpoolLashes.  Please, if you think you'd be interested then either topic, direct message me on Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat (@liverpoollashes) and if I have a decent response then I will.  You actually help me more than you'll ever know so I want to give back.

I possibly won't get time for a Slim Down Sunday post next week as I'll be away but I am planning to be back up and running with it as of the following week, every week without excuses because clearly that's what I need to do, I need to beat this once and for all.

NOTD: Geometric Rainbows

My nails were at that length that they were starting to rip so unless I have a special event on, it's time to hack them down and start again.  I do like having them short again for a while, it means that I don't dig into my eyeshadows etc when I'm applying my make up which is a novelty.  The only thing is, I just don't think any design looks as good as if it would if they were a little longer. That aside, there was no way I go bare nailed so I got straight into doing them.

Everywhere at the moment is the Lecente Rainbow & Chrome Powders and rightly so, they're gorgeous.  I found I couldn't resist going for the rainbow powder again over CND Shellac in Tinted Love.  If you'd like to see my post and video on the application - click here.

I actually wore them like this for the day and loved it but then returning back to my nail desk with a spare 15 minutes I then stamped over it with MoYou London Hipster Plate 07.

Focusing On: Lecente Silver Chrome Powder

I decided to do a focusing on post and video on the Lecente Silver Chrome Powder after so many of you enjoyed my Rainbow Powder version.  As I said in that post, I'm obsessed with having products in my kit that can create hundreds of different effects and since this is another one of them, I had to show you what I've come up with as quite a few of them are using shelf sitters for me.

I have to say I don't like it with yellow at all, as you'll see in the video I just don't think it does the colours any favours but everything else it works fantastic with.  I have also saw photos of CND Shellac and Wisteria Haze with the silver chrome finish and that's gorgeous too although I didn't do it in my video.

Here's the video - enjoy!

Lecente Chrome & Rainbow Powder Application

I would say that chrome and rainbow powders are the biggest product to hit the nail industry recently and shake things up.  For a long time I've steered clear of them as many were not a cosmetic standard and therefore I would not even entertain putting them near any of my clients.  When Lecente announced that they were releasing their powders I was ridiculously excited and when they landed on my doormat a little while ago I was instantly in love.
Having not trying the application before I was concerned if I would get the hang of the application but I actually found it straight forward and these nails were my first attempt with my rainbow tips (click here)

I'll go through the steps:
  1. After full prep, apply base coat and then colour coats, curing between each layer.
  2. Apply a layer of Lecente Layer It and cure under an LED lamp for one minute or a UV lamp for two minutes.
  3. Apply your powder from the free edge by gently smoothing over the nail with the applicator.
  4. Using a dry lint free wipe, remove any loose excess product to ensure it doesn't get caught in the bristles of the top coat.
  5. Apply your usual top coat ensuring you thoroughly cap the free edge, cure and remove the sticky layer.
I have filmed a 'focusing on' post just showing all of the gorgeous colour combinations that is possible with the rainbow powder, click here to watch it.

I was delighted to do the application video for Lecente's You Tube Channel here:

NOTD: Rainbow Tips

When the Lecente Chrome & Rainbow Powders arrived on my doorstep it was odd that I didn't want to instantly do full coverage of them.  My friend Jade who is a nail tech too asked me why I didn't and I simply said to her that that was the obvious choice and I wanted something a little different.

What that turned out to be was CND Shellac in Beau with the rainbow powder just at the tip.  I'm not a traditional French manicure fan personally, I don't think it's my style at all but something like this is really elegant and really easy to do.

I do however have a 'focusing on' blog post and video showing all of the gorgeous colours you can create with the powder, click here to watch it.

The video I have filmed for the Lecente You Tube Channel on the application of their chrome and rainbow powders is here.  I'll also be showing a video of these nails and how they move in the light on my Instagram.

Focusing On: Lecente Rainbow Powder

I decided to do today's focusing on post in the new Lecente Rainbow Powder that was released this morning.  I love versatile products and since you can do so much with it I decided to get a load of different colours together and film a video to see exactly what this beautiful product can do.

I've purposely chosen colours from every colour family so you can get an idea of what it would look like under each one of them.  The results, I think you'll agree, are truly breathtaking and I definitely have my favourites!
