My Current Favourite Lecente Glitters

I wanted to get back into making videos again as for a while now things have gotten so busy that I couldn't have possibly set time aside regularly to be able to film, edit and upload videos so I wanted to put something together to start off with and what better to talk about a nail techs favourite topic, glitter.

Although I have a huge drawer of glitter, my clients always adore Lecente glitter in particular and since it's one of the easiest to access (through Sweet Squared in the UK and lecente.com for the rest of the world) I figured I would choose a couple of my current loves and show you what I've been doing with them.

I do hope you enjoy the video, I've checked that all of the shades are still available on Sweet Squared at the time of recording it.  Please let me know what your favourites are and make sure you follow my Facebook page for tutorials coming up soon!

Spring/Easter Nails

I fancied doing something fun for today's post so I decided to have a little play with some pastel colours and come up with a design for that would want either a spring or specially an Easter look.

liverpoollashes liverpool lashes shellac vinylux nail art easter spring bunnies rabbits

The brush that I used for the detail is the Micro Styler 0000 which I have already reviewed here.  I like the simplicity of each nail which to be honest, didn't take me very long to do at all but works well together I think.

The colours I used are all from CND and they are Creekside, Lust Tropics, Electric Orange, Cream Puff, Beckoning Begona, Lilac Longing, Black Pool, Cake Pop and Daring Escape (Vinylux)

For clients just wanting a little something and not the full look it would be fast to just add one of the designs to just one nail as an accent.

I hope you like it!  Please don't forget to follow my facebook page to keep up to date with my latest posts.

MAC Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in Kiss Me Quick

I used to associate lip liners with that look that thankfully went out of fashion a long time ago where you wore a darker liner with a lighter coloured lipstick.  Utterly ridiculous but I just put them in the 'retro' bracket until it came to me getting onto my search for the perfect red lip.  Of course you can use a lip brush and lipstick but I also wanted to make it last.  Previously I had loved MAC lip liner in 'Cherry' but since that was out of stock I was forced to look for an alternative.

liverpoollashes liverpool lashes mac pro longwear lip pencil in kiss me quick

Cue the purchase of MAC Pro Longwear Lip Pencil in Kiss Me Quick because the sales assistant told me it was the nearest alternative and to be fair, I'm always up for trying new product lines (Cherry isn't a Pro Longwear Lip Pencil)  The colour of Kiss Me Quick is pretty similar to Cherry, it's possibly slightly more red as opposed to the slight pink tone that Cherry has.

liverpoollashes liverpool lashes mac pro longwear lip pencil in kiss me quick

I have worn this lip liner on it's own to completely fill in my lips and also with a red lipstick over it and I can tell you that the last power is fantastic.  I have eaten and drank things and be shocked that the majority, if not all of it is still on.  As you can expect, if you were having a full meal the corners will often wear away but the longevity of it gives me the confidence to wear it and not feel the need to reapply at the first available opportunity.

liverpoollashes liverpool lashes mac pro longwear lip pencil in kiss me quick

The bottom line is that I love this lip liner.  It glides on without too much dragging like some can do.  It wears really well and it extremely pigmented so that you can wear it alone, with a lip gloss over or a lipstick.  I think I actually prefer it to Cherry now as well!

My Experience: No Shows

This morning I received a private message from a nail technician who was disheartened by the amount of new clients that do not turn up for their appointments so I thought I would talk about my experience of it today.

When you're building your client base, nothing is more exciting (and probably nerve wracking) than having a name you don't know in your appointment book.  You think "finally I'm bringing new people in!" and if you're anything like me, you would breathe a sigh of relief, quietly hope that there will be a stampede of others behind them.  Just the potential of that new person and the fact they could become one of your first regulars gives you a buzz.  Then, they don't turn up and you have a sinking feeling.  You're asking what you did wrong?  Were you too keen on the phone?  Maybe she didn't like your work after all.  On an off day you may even tell yourself that she would be better going elsewhere anyway as you're not very good... (Which if you have thought that I will personally get mad at you because I'm sure you are good!  Don't ever put yourself down!)

You could go on forever pondering why they didn't turn up but the reality is, it's them and not you.  You haven't even had the chance to show them your skills so never blame yourself.  They probably think that this never happens to you, you'll be rush off your feet and glad of a break.  They've probably also told themselves that you have a handful of people on chairs in the salon, praying that someone like them doesn't turn up so one of those poor souls can have their appointment.

I don't want to group every "no-show" together here but generally, unless it was some sort of true emergency, they're probably not your ideal client anyway.  When I worked in the salon I would have people book appointments for two hours time and not show up, there's no excuse for that as far as I'm concerned.  You can hardly say that you'd forgotten!

Of course you can always set your cancellation policies.  Some salons charge a certain percentage of the treatment should the client not turn up.  Some insist on a non refundable deposit if the client was to book again.

If the client has booked some time ago then many therapists find that their percentage of no-shows drops if they send a text message the day before the appointment.  When you're new your confidence is probably low and you don't want to seem to pester clients so if you feel that way, even make it look a little automated if that makes you feel better!  One text message is hardly pestering - remember that!  Something as simple as:

"Hi this is Karen at LiverpoolLashes confirming your nail appointment for tomorrow, Sunday 29th March at 11.15am.  I shall look forward to seeing you then!"

Anyway, I have good news for you!  I found that as time got on and I built a client base, the no-shows became and less and less.  Clients that have been to you before and "know you" will treat you with the respect you deserve and typically message or phone if something comes up and they can't make their appointment, usually with a lot of notice.  Also I suppose, although the no-shows are bound to still happen they won't effect your confidence as much as you know at that point that you have a ton of regulars that adore your work!

The moral of the story is to persevere with it.  Of course it's demoralising as you just want to do what you've trained and practiced for but I do believe that this is something we all go through and it does get better,

MAC Matte Lipstick in Lady Danger

For a while now I've had a hankering to get a bright orange/red lipstick after admiring Kourtney Kardashian and Tanya from Real Housewives Of Cheshire's bright lips.  I do adore MAC lipsticks so whilst at the airport I decided to take advantage of the duty free and pick a few shades up.

liverpoollashes liverpool lashes mac lipstick lady danger bright lips kourtney kardashian

As usual, this lipstick has a slight vanilla send which is really pleasant to me.  Nothing feels better than a brand-new MAC lipstick.  Although I already have our slightly darker red lipstick in the shade "Russian Red" I really wanted the brightest orange/red lipstick that I could find.

liverpoollashes liverpool lashes mac lipstick lady danger bright lips kourtney kardashian

The shade is truly fantastic and the pigmentation is amazing, exactly what I was after.  Unfortunately as this is our Matt finish, it does dry out your lips slightly.  The upside to it being Matt however is that the where time is incredible so for such a bright shade you can trust it to still be on your lips once you've eaten a meal.
liverpoollashes liverpool lashes mac lipstick lady danger bright lips kourtney kardashian

The bottom line is that I absolutely adore the shade.  I can see myself getting a lot of use out of this over the summer.  The dryness is something that I will need to get used to and just make sure that my lips are hydrated before application.

My False Lash Secret Weapon

I've been putting false lashes on for over six years now.  I went through a stage at one point where as I wore them every single day for over two years.  It's funny as no matter how much experience I have in them, sometimes I still get it a little bit wrong so I have my own little tricks that I do to fix the problem.  There's nothing worse than having to reapply the lash, removing the old glue etc and starting again.

When you're learning to apply false lashes it's highly likely that you don't them close enough to the lash line.  Once it's started drying it's too late so something I do every single time is to take my eyelash curlers and gently clamp both my natural and false lashes in the chamber and press them together.  This gives an excellent, seemless result and is the best way of blending the two together - result!

No.7 Illuminating Magnifying Make Up Mirror

For years I've fancied a really good mirror with the lights around it.  Originally I would have loved the ones like a proper Hollywood dressing room but as that wouldn't have worked with the space I had, I eventually got the No.7 Illuminating Magnifying Make Up Mirror for Christmas the year before last from my husband.

With one side being a regular mirror and the other being a 5x magnifying mirror, I figured that it would be a all "all rounder" for everything I needed.  I like that the light is on both sides too and the overall finish of the mirror is pretty luxurious for the price.

When I first switched it on however I was disappointed and the light is very yellow and not a bright daylight like I was hoping for.  This means if I'm trying to apply make up using this light there really is no way of me working out the correct amount of product to use to get an accurate colour.  I would say that for this reason, it's only good to use in the day without the light.

On the plus side, this mirror is amazing (and a little scary) for up close work like plucking your eyebrows or being a little freaked out looking at your pores close up.  I suppose, thinking about it, that the yellow light means you can sit fairly close to the magnifying side without being blinded as it's not too bright.

Overall I do recommend this mirror for close up "maintenance" jobs like plucking and applying eyelashes even but definitely not for make up with the light.

Bath & Body Works 3 Wick Candle in Fresh Water & Sea Salt

I don't know what it is but within the last year or so I've become obsessed with everything that has sea salt in it, whether that be chocolate, caramel or whatever.  When I looked online before my visit to the States and saw that Bath & Body Works has a "Fresh Water & Sea Salt" candle, I was delighted and couldn't wait to pick it up.

I like the colour and style of the packaging, I think it really suits the theme of the frangrance.  I would say it smells like a vague clean linen scent mixed in with the freshness of sea salts.  The scent itself is not incredibly strong when smelling directly from the candle, both lit and unlit.

I actually purchased three of this candle as I was convinced I would adore it however having burnt through almost half of it already I can confirm that the scent just wasn't as strong as many others that Bath & Body Works do and therefore I wouldn't really recommend it.

NOTD: Floral Fades

Admittedly I've been going crazy with my nails recently.  I used to do them every two to three weeks unless I really was bored of them but recently I think I've been doing them more for therapeutic purposes!

It took me a ridiculously long time to even brainstorm what I wanted to do with them but I got there eventually!

I used CND Shellac in Beckoning Begonia with CND Additive in Amethyst Flash around the edge in an ombré halo style, I love the contrast of the two shades!  I then used MoYou London XL collection plate 13 to stamp the print onto each nail using Konad Special Polish in black.

I really adore these bad boys!  They're exactly what I think I was after!  Don't forget to follow my Facebook page to keep up to date with my latest posts!

Sheer Shellac Shades - Resolved!

For a while now there's been talk of CND Shellac shades being released and the odd one or two being a more sheer formula than others.  I'm not going to get into speculation of why that is because it could be a ton of reasons but today's post is to try and make the job easier.  (Obviously you should always shake the bottle before the application and if necessary, stir the formula with an orange stick to ensure it is evenly mixed.)

liverpoollashes sheer shellac shades you tuber blogger north west

Of course I prefer to do two coats of any shade for many reasons, it's more cost effective, it's quicker, I do believe it's less likely to chip to name a few.  However, if your client chooses one of the new more sheer shades, it's sometimes too late by the time that you have discovered that the third coat isn't quite going to cover her prominent natural smile line.

One of my followers mentioned using CND Shellac in Romantique underneath the colour coats as she didn't use that shade very often.  Romantique is a very good idea as its a milky, slightly sheer pink and would try to masque the nail bed however the colour that I think is perfect and has been working well for me is Studio White.

When Studio White was released I was really excited as I thought it would be a good alternative for clients that want a more natural french polish however as time has got on I find that for the small amount of french polishes I do, my clients always request the brighter Cream Puff instead.

The above photo is 2x coats of CND Shellac in Mint Convertible on the left and then the same on the right only I applied a layer of Studio White first.  I put the colour pops on the patterned foil so that you could hopefully see the difference it makes.

As I say, I would prefer not to have to do three coats but for the rare occasion a client chooses a shade that I know may need a little something extra, I now ensure that I always apply a layer of Studio White first which is equally giving me a good finish as well as using one of my shelf sitters.

I hope you've found this post useful.  Please make sure you're following my Facebook page to keep up to date with my latest posts.

Three Current Beauty Loves

I thought I'd mention my top three loves right now.  These three beauty products have me literally obsessed with them.

First up is the Laura Mercier Body Soufflé in Amber Vanille.  This is the little size that I got in their pâtisserie gift set however I do have the full size version now too which shows you how obsessed with it I am!  Ultimately it's a luxury vanilla scent body cream that glides onto the skin, sinks in fast but the best part is that the fragrance lasts on my skin virtually the entire day - it's amazing!

Next up is the Buxom Full On slip Cream in "White Russian."  Ahhhh there's something about this lip gloss that is blowing my mind.  It's ridiculously shiny as well as the colour being an absolutely perfect combination of a sheer but pink nude shade.  It just makes my lips look delicious (i think anyway!)

Lastly is the elegant fragrance of Miss Dior Cherie which I've had for a couple of years now.  It's such a sophisticated scent that's not too sweet, not too child like but not too mature, it's absolutely gorgeous!

Benefit Roller Lash Mascara

Obviously given my username, I am obsessed with lashes.  It's a given, everyone expects me to have eye make up on and lashes but on the days that I decide to go "au naturale" it's important that I am rocking a good mascara.  I've always liked Benefits Bad Gal Lash mascara but didn't think as much of their They're Real mascara personally, despite many loving it.  I recently received a same size version of Benefit Roller Lash mascara so I was keen to trial it and see what I thought.

The brush itself has a pretty small head to it compared to their Bad Gal Lash which is huge.  The one thing I was relieved at was that it's not a sharp brush head like They're Real either as I was always poking my eye out with the "torture style" brush.

The formula lengthens my lashes and more importantly, I actually do believe that it helped to lift my fairly straight lashes.  I would however say that that lift didn't stay and did drop after a couple of hours.

Overall I do like this mascara.  The brush is easy to control and I was able to get close to the root to completely coat my lashes.  I would definitely get the full size version of this mascara and recommend it!

NOTD: Key To My Heart Nails

I hold my hands up and admit that I just wasn't happy with my last nail of the day nails so unfortunately, they didn't even last 48 hours and I removed them which I realise is a total waste.

I wasn't sure what I wanted to do but I knew I wanted to do something pretty but with a little bit of basic, freehand nail art.  Originally I was going to do stars but then I looked at my key pendant that I got for my birthday and decided to draw that.

For the blue nails I used CND Shellac in Azure Wish and Lost Labyrinth over it.  The white nails are CND Shellac in Cream Puff and Lecente Stardust glitter in Milky Way over it.  On the index finger I used MoYou London Princess Plate 14 with 2 True Metallica polish in 'Aglaia' to print the scribbled hearts on.  The ring finger I used CND Shellac in Asphalt to paint the key and chains using the Micro Styler 0000 brush (click here for the review.)

My Work: Disney Princess Ish Nails

When fellow nail technician Jade came to visit and have her nails done, I knew it was going to be an exciting day.  The only let down is that Jade is to the most indecisive person ever so she had no clue what she wanted, she just told me that yellows and greens were a no-no as she didn't think they suited her skintone.  She didn't really want pink as that's the colour she had on last.

As Jade couldn't make a decision, I decided on CND Shellac in Rock Royalty, Wisteria Haze and Locket Love.  I made a glitter paste with Lecente Stardust in Cluster (top coat and glitter mixed together) and painted a fish scale pattern over the purple.  I then used Lecente Stardust in Milky Way to apply over Locket Love which took some of the yellow tones out of Locket Love and made it an even more beautiful shade.

Since Jade generally wears one shade on all of her nails, I should imagine this will be quite a change for her!

NOTD: Black But Bright Nails

I absolutely didn't need to redo my nails at all but I decided to do it anyway.  At first I was thinking about just doing black nails but then I decided that was a waste when I have so many lovely things to add to it!

Eventually I decided to apply CND Shellac in Black Pool to my thumb, index and little finger.  On my ring finger I applied the new Shellac shade in Lost Labyrinth and then on my middle finger I used Pink Bikini with Butterfly Queen over it.  On the two brighter nails I mixed a glitter paste of Lecente Stardust glitter in Galaxy and painted triangles.

I did actually use tiny pieces of silver foil around the edge of the triangles but you can barely see them - lesson learnt that I won't bother in future!  Hope you like them!

Buxom Full On Lip Cream In White Russian

I had heard a lot about Buxom Full On Lip Cream, particularly in the shade White Russian that I just had to pick it up when I was over in the States.  I have to admit, I would say that it was a lip gloss really and I am definitely not usually a lip gloss girl but I figured I would see what all the fuss was about anyway.

I love the frosted style packaging, I think it makes a change to the usual clear plastic tubes that most lip glosses are finished with.  The scent of this lip cream is very sweet and the closest thing I can liken it to is caramel, unfortunately it does not taste as good as it smells (although it's not horrendous either, I may add)

It terms of the texture, I can confirm that it is not particularly sticky on your lips which is really nice.  As you're applying it you can feel the cool, minty sensation which at first I worried that I wouldn't like but it turns out that it's pleasant and didn't annoy me at all!

The colour of White Russian is very sheer with a hint of a pink/ nude which is truly stunning.  As I wear a lot of eye make up, this lip cream is absolutely perfect to go with any other make up that you have on.

The only downfall of it is that I don't think the application brings out enough product but this is fairly minor to me, I just wish they would change it in the future.  Apart from that, I highly recommend this lip cream - it's gorgeous and lasts well.

Focusing On: Lecente Ultra Fine Glitter in Rhubarb

I knew the moment that I saw Lecente Ultra Fine Glitter that it was a hidden gem.  Personally, I think looking at the pot just doesn't do it justice.  I have been saying to myself for a while that I need to showcase the magic that it holds more to my clients and let it shine (no pun intended!)

liverpoollashes liverpool lashes lecente ultra fine glitter in rhubarb cnd shellac layering combinations

I chose a various of shades, light and dark so that you can get an idea of what it can do and I have to say, one of them is currently blowing my mind.

liverpoollashes liverpool lashes lecente ultra fine glitter in rhubarb cnd shellac layering combinations
From left to right of the above photo I used Tango Passion, Rose Bud, Indigo Frock, Wild Moss and Lobster Roll.  My absolute favourite is Indigo Frock, the green and blue tones are amazing, you need to try it!  I think that this colour is fantastic with the bright and the dark shades in particular.
I hope this has helped give you a few layering combinations using this glitter!  Follow me on Facebook to keep up to date with my latest posts.

Jo Malone Earl Grey & Cucumber

I adore Jo Malone fragrances and thought I'd found my perfect scent in their Wood Sage & Sea Salt scent when my husband bought me it for Christmas.

I was pleasantly surprised to smell the Earl Grey & Cucumber fragrance a couple of months back and I fell in love with it.  I don't mind the smell of tea but I don't like cucumbers both to eat or to smell at all however, this perfume smells like neither of them!

It's hard to describe but I would say it was a very clean and fresh scent, possibly slightly unisex.  My only issue is that it doesn't really last very long both on my skin or on my clothes which is a huge shame considering the price of it

It's a tough one for me as I love but since the longevity isn't really very long, I possibly would consider purchasing a different scent from their range in future.

Sore Throat Solution: Tyrozets

Today's post is a bit different than normal as I'm recommending something that's not beauty related but I find not enough people know about them.

Sore throats are a pain.  They can stop you eating, even make you feel a bit sick.  Years ago my parents used to give me Strepsils to make everything better but I swear they're just a sweet.  Someone recommended Tyrozets to me and I've been buying them ever since.

If you've not heard of them then it's probably because they're held behind the counter at the chemists and everywhere sells them.  They contain anaesthetic  to numb your throat and antibiotic to help fight the throat infection.  The numbing is fantastic and really does work as well!

Tyrozets are sold at virtually all chemists so they're definitely worth asking for if you're suffering.  Hope this helps!

Bath & Body Works 3 Wick Candle in Lilac Blossom

The for past three springs I've considered purchasing the "Lilac Blossom" candle from Bath & Body Works for one reason or another I've always ended up not purchasing it, either it's gone out of stock or the prices on eBay have gone crazy (which tells me it's a really good candle but I refused to pay it) Anyway, finally I ended up purchasing two of them whilst in Florida last week and now that I'm home, I totally wish I'd picked up tons of them.

Obviously this is a floral scent but it's not in old fashioned kind of way, it's more like an authentic lilac plant way. We had a lilac plant by our front door (I say had because I didn't water it so it died) but it smells exactly like that.

This candle gives off fragrance within minutes of lighting it which is particularly exceptionally fast, even by Bath & Body Works' usual standards.

In the UK, the cheapest way of purchasing these candles are on eBay (expect to pay around £18) and if you want one, you need to act fast as this scent is now being phased out for the summer range to come in.

The bottom line is, if you think you'll like this candle - get it.  Don't hesitate.  I absolutely adore it.

The Edge Brand Overview

I was kindly contacted by Iain from The Edge to review some of their products.  The Edge is a professional brand that I recognised the nail from my local beauty supply store.  Although I am not too familiar with many of their products, I did however have their UV lamp for quite a few years which was fantastic.  I was also interested to find out that although they are a professional brand, they do also stock items for general consumers who love their beauty products too.

liverpoollashes liverpool lashes the edge nails and beauty review nail colour glass crystal files eyelashes
Left to right - Serrano, Sri Lanka, Monaco, Dubai, Bordeaux & Santa Rosa

First up is their nail colours which I had a selection of to try.  Without sounding too much like Goldilocks the brush is not too thin, nor too wide so it's really easy to control for even the smallest nail beds.  The formula is smooth and went on evenly.  I would say, however, that Serrano (the pale blue) needed slightly more attention to ensure an even coverage but in general the paler pastels from any brand seem to be pretty much the same in terms of the attention required.
liverpoollashes liverpool lashes the edge nails and beauty review nail colour glass crystal files eyelashes
Edge Nails Nail Colour in 'Bordeaux'
My favourite shades are Dubai which is a deep red wine colour and Bordeaux which is a dusty pink/mauve which shockingly I'm convinced is a colour that I don't already own, despite my nail polish collection being over the 250 bottles mark!  At 11ml a bottle, the price is fantastic without compromising on quality.  If I was starting off as a new nail tech again or keen to add to my personal collection of nail colours then I would definitely recommend them.

liverpoollashes liverpool lashes the edge nails and beauty review nail colour glass crystal files eyelashes

There is also a French Manicure set which contains everything you need for that classic finish.  I think this would be a lovely set to purchase for a birthday present or even for mother day.

Next up is their Super Shiner which I was pleasantly surprised with as it gave a high shine finish with minimum effort.  I would actually say it was virtually exactly the same as the more expensive brand that I normally use.  The same also goes for the Zebra Curved 100 grit file and Black Beauty 240 grit file which I found to be excellent quality.

I also received one of their Swarovski Crystal Glass Files which was actually a new experience for me as I've never used one before but I was delighted at how gentle it was to my natural nails.  The gorgeous crystals on it are really eye catching and pretty too.  I think that they would be a brilliant retail product for salons or as a present for a loved one.

I must admit I giggled when I received the box and saw that they also did false lashes as I would consider myself at pretty much an expert level of lashes so I can give a good review on them.  I received the 'Flutterbabe' style which are beautiful and full.  They're easy to apply and to re-use which is fantastic.  I must admit that I did think they would be slightly more inexpensive than they were, comparing to other beauty supply store brands but it is only a minor difference.

The Edge are a 100% British brand, everything is all operated from the UK - their factory, warehouse and customer service team which I really like as I think it's good to support your own country.
The lovely people at The Edge Nails & Beauty are offering a 20% discount for everyone who places their first order using the code WELCOMEOFFER at the checkout.  I hope that you've enjoyed reading this post and that you've found it interesting!

NOTD: Fresh Blue & Silver Nails

Since it was time to re-do my nails I did my usual brainstorming where as I grab a couple of colours and play around with the combination until I figure out what I like.  I will then start playing around choosing glitters, foils or whatever else I fancy and this was exactly what I was in the mood for!

liverpoollashes liverpool lashes nail art ink london ilac i-70 i-67 gorgeous nails

I applied INK London iLac in shade I-70 to all nails apart from the middle finger which I applied I-67 to and Lecente Silver Ultra Fine Glitter over.  I then used Konad Special Polish in white to stamp an image from MoYou Suki Collection plate 05 which is the first time I've used it.

liverpoollashes liverpool lashes nail art ink london ilac i-70 i-67 gorgeous nails
The blue is even more gorgeous 'in real life' but I think that this combination is really clean and fresh.  I did burnish the glitter onto the nail to give more of a foil effect finish which I really like.  I hope you like them!

LED Lit Portable Mirror

I'd seen the compact LED mirrors in the beauty shows but couldn't really justify purchasing one at the time.  It was only when I was packing my suitcase that I remembered that when I was last on holiday I struggled to apply my make up without my proper vanity mirror.  As luck would have it, when I got onto the plane they had them in the duty free magazine.

When I bought it I was delighted that it had a little velvet pouch to store it.  When I opened it on the plane however I was disappointed with the quality of it.  The mirror didnt seem to be attached properly and the hinge on it seems very flimsy for £17.

I do like the lights on it which would be good for a night out but I do find that the lights so close to where you're looking it almost makes it harder to see in it.

It does have a magnifying side which is excellent for plucking my eyebrows etc and I like that it can be bent into the right angle.

Overall, I'm glad I have this mirror but I don't think it was worth £17 at all and probably £10 maximum would be a more reasonable price point.

Benefit Triple Performing Face Emulsion

I received a Benefit Triple Performing Face Emulsion as part of a goody bag from an event a couple of months ago.  The staff at the counter had given me a chat, introducing each product and applying them to my face and I feel in love instantly with the scent of it which is really clean and fresh.

liverpoollashes benefit triple performing face emulsion
I really like the style of the packaging and the bottle itself, it almost has a 'castaway' style feel to it or some sort of magic potion.  The moment you apply this to your skin it appears to add light reflecting properties to it, not enough to turn you into a disco ball but just a little highlight.
This moisturiser sinks in fairly quickly so I can then get on with doing my make up and when I do use it under foundation it helps to give a natural radiance.  I would also say that since I have oily/combination skin, it doesn't make my oils throughout the day as some moisturisers do.

The bottom line is once the bottle has ran out I would definitely consider purchasing enough.  The scent of it is really refreshing and the result it gives is pleasant.

CND Shellac Cream Puff Application

I read a lot about nail techs struggling to applied CND Shellac in Cream Puff.  I believe it is because it's has such a dense amount of pigment that the bottle appears to get thicker, faster.  My method is to sit with the bottle underneath my arm for a few minutes during prep, after I have shaken it.  I find that the natural temperature that my body changes it to really helps with the application.

For the application itself, I like to wipe you put most off it off the brush and then work it into the nail.   Sometimes it can be difficult to get a thin layer so what I will do then, if it's not been thin enough, is to wipe the brush completely into the bottle and then I will go back over the nail, removing any excess.  Of course this may make it then look more patchy but as we know it is better to apply more thin layers than it is to apply less thicker layers.  Afterall, it's the excess product on the nail that wrinkles so if that's not there, then you will have a beautifully smooth finish when the client removes their hand from the lamp.

In using this method I find that I do have slightly more leeway with the second coat in terms of thickness.  I do also do this with any of the more opaque Shellac shades such as Cake Pop, Sun Bleached and Creekside.

This was just a quick tip for today's post but I think it may help some of you.  Don't forget to follow my Facebook Page to keep up to date with my latest posts!

Focusing On: CND Shellac In Wisteria Haze

New CND Shellac shade in Wisteria Haze is the final colour from the Garden Muse collection that I shall be focusing on.

At first glance you may think that it's similar to Lilac Longing but when you see them together they're really not and I actually think I prefer it to Lilac Longing.

I shall go from left to right of the above photo.
  • I used the new Lecente Stardust glitter in Starlight to pat down the centre of the colour pop.
  • I dotted new Shellac shades Butterfly Queen and Beckoning Begona to create flowers and then patter Lecente glitter in Starlight around it.
  • Using the new Additive Dream Lily from the Flora & Fauna collection, I patted it around the outside of the colour pop in a halo effect.
  • I created a 3D texture effect and applied new Lecente Stardust glitter in 'Cluster' over it.
  • Finally I used the new Lecente Stardust in 'Aurora' for full coverage.

Pusheen Nail Art

Today's post is just a quick one to show a little bit of nail art I was having fun with inbetween clients.  I'm a major cat lady so I decided I wanted to have a go at the little Facebook image that they call 'Pusheen' which is a sweet little cat that does all kinds of little actions.

I used CND Shellac entirely for this design.  The background is Cream Puff, the cat is Field Fox for the body and Rubble for the outline.  I used Rosebud for the heart and the pizza was created using Sun Bleached and Crimson Sash.
I don't often draw characters but Pusheen was just too cute for me to not have a go of.  I would definitely wear this on my nails!

Personal Post: Today Is My 30th Birthday!

Well today is my 30th birthday so I wanted to do a post that's a personal post.  When I started LiverpoolLashes five years ago next month, I had no idea where it would take me.  If you want to read about how this all started, click the 'about me' tab below the banner.

My intention was to never be personal, to not to let the online world see the true me as you'd see that I really am pretty average, perhaps on the quirky side of average.  I'm the girl that wears a white top for dinner and drips gravy or some sort of cloth-staining sauce on it the moment I lift my fork.  I'm the girl that opened a Swarovski crystal figurine on my birthday a few years ago, upside down and it felt straight out and smashed.  There's things I struggle with for example I can't read out loud publicly as the words just fall out in the wrong order and my cheeks will burn like the hottest day in summer.  I'm the girl who looks at elegant women and longs to be a part of that crowd.  If you've ever met me you'll know that this is exactly who I am and the truth is, I'm pretty under confident.  I do however, want you to know me.  I want you to know my sense of humour and I even like it when you all leave comments with my name in.
I've dreaded turning thirty.  People say that your twenties are the best years of your life so if that's true, I'm screwed.  I'm currently on a cruise around the Caribbean as I couldn't stand the thought of being at home for my impending doom (okay, I'm just being dramatic but it was originally how I felt!)  Recently my life has been taken in unexpected directions which has made me the happiest I've ever been.  I feel like when you're truly happy it gives off some sort of radiance from within that means you can conquer anything, wow if I could bottle it - I would!

I thought I would talk about some of lessons I've learnt in these past thirty years because believe me, my younger self would never have believed I would be saying some of them now!

Never do things on impulse
Half of me wants to joke about this and say 'unless its something on clearance as a crazy price' but really I'm talking more about responding to other peoples actions.  In my younger days, if you crossed me you would have been firmly put into your place.  Now I feel a strange calmness where as I will go away, assess the situation and come back to it at a later stage.  That's not to say I'm perfect but I do know many people that could do with trying this one for themselves!  How many times have you come away from an argument and said 'should have said this!  should have said that!' That's probably because you don't feel you got your point across originally - so that's why you should have waited and gathered your thoughts!

When it comes to any relationship, mirror the other person
I'm talking any type of relationship whether it be friends or love, give to them what they give to you and no more.  I've learnt this one the hard way, far too many times - believe me!  Whatever the relationship is, if it becomes unbalanced and one is making more effort than the other, it is never going to work out no matter how hard you try.  The simple fact is, if they want to make the time for you, they will.  That friend that perhaps you ask for them to go with you to something not so fun but they let you down last minute, yet you know that if you offered her a free set of nails she wouldn't be able to get to your house fast enough, it's time to mirror their attitude and not be so giving.  There are exceptions to my little rule by the way, of course if they are copying how you are with them, then it could be the loss of a beautiful relationship so I would occasionally offer more to them, if they don't buck their ideas up then it's back to mirroring them.

Don't compare your life to others
It's within us all to look at others the same age or similar circumstances and see what they have and perhaps, wish you had the same.  The truth is, that persons life may look perfect but if you were to talk to them they'd tell you at least five things that are dragging them down at any given moment.  I feel like you learn this more working in the beauty industry as clients confide in you.  You can see that they have the big house, the fancy car, the perfect children but when they open up to you you may find out that they're unhappy in their relationship but to the outside, they have an amazing life.

Be kind
This is a big one for me and I'm unsure how to tackle this topic so I'll hit it head on.  At the end of 2013 something changed in my mind which meant I was very down.  There was no official cause that I knew of and although I realise I should have, I never went to the doctors and battled my way through it for the best part of around ten months.  I can't believe I'm putting this out there actually but I'm human and I want you all to know that.  Anyway for those frightening months I was very emotional and anything could have set me off.  Thankfully I rarely get a remotely nasty comment on You Tube or any social media.. but I knew that a throw away stupid comment could really harm me.  What I'm trying to say is, be kind as much as you possibly can, you have no idea what someone else is going through, only my very close family knew I wasn't right so you just don't know what someone else is going through.

Be eccentric now
This is something I read somewhere but it's totally true.  Don't wait to go crazy as an old lady, wear and look exactly as you want to now.  In my call centre days I wouldn't have even dared wear eyeshadow for fear of what others would think of me, although I wanted to.  I worried people would wonder who I was dressing my eyeballs for but now I don't care.  If you've ever met me you'll know I always have eye make up on for two reasons, one because I love it and two is because at this point I have that much of the stuff that I will not even make a dent in it unless I use it regularly!  My clients will arrive at 9am and I have a dark chocolate smoky eye and false lashes because that's just what I felt like when I woke up!

Everything will be alright in the end
Situations happen in your life that can completely devastate you.  They will leave you crying your heart out, wishing there was some way that the pain will stop.  At that point you wonder how you'll ever be okay again but it will.  The dips in your life are always temporary and I believe that you have to go through them to feel the amazing highs of life as well.  Everything will be alright in the end, if it's not alright, it's not the end.

Anyway, I hope you've enjoyed today's post, it's taken me a while to write as I never know what to say and what you're interested in reading when I do go off topic but all I can do is be myself.  When it comes to birthdays I have a new attitude, growing old beats the alternative, dying young so live life to the full.

Love Karen xx

Focusing On: CND Shellac in Lost Labyrinth

The new CND Shellac shade Lost Labyrinth deserves more than just a blog post, it deserves a parade as it's utterly beautiful!  Today's post is me focusing on it and I just did a couple of simple ideas with it to get you started with your own creations.

To be fair there is far more than I could come up with with this shade so I may even revisit this colour at a later stage!

I'm going to go from left to right of the above photo to show you what I used to create the design.
  • Full coverage of the new Lecente Stardust glitter in 'Earth'
  • New Shellac shade 'Butterfly Queen,' carved.
  • New Lecente Stardust glitter shades Eclipse and Earth over the nail, dots applied using top coat which were then cured.  I removed the remaining glitter to reveal the dots and applied the top coat.
  • Glitter paste with CND Additive 'Pave Diamonds' to paint the fish scale style design
  • Using the new Lecente Stardust glitter in Eclipse I patted a sweeping line down the sidewall.

NYX Matte Blotting Papers

This post is going to be short and sweet but I simply wanted to put it out there, somewhere online so that it can be found.  I have oily/ combination skin so in the summer and my more active days I do need to blot my face to avoid a rather unattractive shine.

I bought the NYX Matte Blotting Papers to try out whilst I was over in the States but it's taken me a while getting around to actually trying them.  Finally I had a situation where I was desperate to blot my face so pulled out these bad boys.  Now previously, I would have told you that I thought blotting paper would be blotting paper but I didn't really feel that this sheets actually soaked up the oil very well at all.  Disgusting or not, I didn't really feel that the sheet even looked like it had done very much either.  Looking in the mirror it was obvious that they really hadn't done an awful lot like the previous papers I've had.

The bottom line is that these might be okay with someone with very minimal oils but generally if you're going to rely on these to touch up your make up then you have no chance, you might as well just take a piece of toilet paper and pat your face and just powder over it.  Give these ones a miss I'd say!
